Abigail Boyle’s journey to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN - November 2016
For many of you who know Abby Boyle she is a kind, respectful, caring girl who by all indications seems very healthy. You may have seen her in town, on her bike or skate board, at a dance or taking pictures of the ocean, and not be aware that since 2006 Abby has been suffering from severe, undiagnosed chronic body pain.
Abby’s Story:
Since 2006 Abby’s symptoms have included intense, sharp, and constant muscle aches and pain all over her body, severe, constant headaches, fatigue, insomnia, frequent nausea and unexplained swelling and inflammation in both hips leaving her unable to walk.
Mornings are debilitating and extremely difficult due to her increased overnight and morning body pain and inflammation which affects her ability to concentrate, get to school on time, and participate in many school activities. When Abby does push herself to dance, swim, jump, run, skate, surf, or even sit for long periods of time, the pain during and following the activity is unbearable. Because of horrible pain she experiences, Abby can only dream of doing many things she loves to do.
Seeking solutions:
Throughout this journey Abby has been seen by over 25 different medical physicians in a variety of medical specialties such as Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Rheumatology, as well as homeopathic specialists and disciplines. Abby has been tested for:
· Autoimmune Diseases
· Bartonella Infection
· Celiac Disease
· Chronic Pain Disorders
· Epstein Barr Virus
· Fibromyalgia
· Food & Seasonal Allergies
· Juvenile Arthritis
· Leukemia
· Lupus
· Lyme Disease
· Multiple Sclerosis
· Thyroid Cancer (Diagnosed with a Goiter in 2011)
· Rocky Mountain Fever
· And many more…
In addition to traditional testing and treatments to determine the source and provide any relief possible to alleviate the pain and inflammation, Abby has tried cupping, acupuncture, massage, pain management massage, physical therapy, chiropractic, and feet detoxing, etc., without long term success.
In 2014 Abby was accepted into a 14 week Chronic Pain Program at Rady Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately, this program was not successful. In 2015 she attempted to find answers with the Center for Infectious Disease.
As you can see, for the past decade, Abby’s family has continually sought to find a diagnosis and cure for Abby’s chronic pain. Recently, her parent’s prayers were hopefully answered when Abby was accepted into the Division of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. This highly recognized medical program is the latest glimmer of hope in their efforts to help their daughter live her life without continued debilitating pain. The Boyles will be traveling to the Mayo Clinic this November, during the Thanksgiving holiday.
This will be a very expensive journey for the family, and like many other attempts they have pursued, this program is not covered by insurance. The medical consultations, tests, specialists, blood work, etc., taking place during their weeklong visit is the newest hope for a child who has endured so much pain.
As her friends, we are hoping to minimize the financial burden by giving Abby’s circle of friends the opportunity to help with expenses. Currently, the estimated cost of visit, e.g. consultations, tests, blood work, and travel fees, is estimated at over $18,000. Additionally, the clinic has informed them that they may incur additional treatment costs.
How you can help:
So many wonderful people have asked the family how they can help Abby’s journey to the Mayo Clinic. Asking for financial help is not in the family’s comfort zone, however, friends have stepped in on their behalf. As her friends, we wish to honor the Boyle family’s love for their child, Abigail, by participating in small and large ways with this Go Fund Me account. We hope that you will join us. Please give what you can; your donation can be as small or large as you wish, and may - of course - be anonymous. We will update this account with news when we have information to share. Hugs and thanks!
Speaking on behalf of Abby.
Abby is extremely thankful for you taking the time to read about her struggles in her life. As she knows, and always says, “everybody has something”. She has been so fortunate for all of the love and support throughout these difficult years dealing with her illness and she loves and thanks all of you!!
