As manager of the College Store for
more than 30 years, Mr. Swinton is
beloved by hundreds of Oakwood alumni and remembered as a shrewd businessman
with a big heart. He helped many single
and married students with jobs and a practical business education. Some say he is an enduring Oakwood College
icon. He starting his career in 1957
during his college days working in the Oakwood College Cafeteria and was
ultimately promoted to executive of the College Store, Snack Bar, Bakery and
gift shop. His legacy and business
acumen lead to the development of scientific food labels for items made at the
store, implementation of student meal
card with Market points and helping turn a profit, not only for the store
enterprise, but also for the campus print shop and facilities management
departments. When he retired in 1997,
Mr. Swinton's tenure at Oakwood was 40 plus years long.
If you remember the Oakwood Store when
it was the destination point on campus, when people traveled across the country
to purchase the best sweet potato pies, butter pound cakes, and bread at
"the Store." If you remember the snack bar where the tastiest veggie burgers, hoagies, and hot dogs were
served with a fountain drink or shake at the bar. Or the long lines for cases of veggie meat and
baked goods during camp meeting. Maybe
you worked for Mr. Swinton at "The Store" or borrowed some items way back when.. anyway,
as I smile with a side eye and a wink.
