Travel/Medical Expenses - Karen's Heart

My niece Karen, 39 years old, was diagnosed with Postpartum Cardiomyopathy, in 2002, shortly after the birth of her twin boys. Lot's of times this condition goes away. However, Karen's never did. In fact her heart has gotten progressively worse.

Karen has Congestive Heart Failure, a Leaky Valve and a Heart Arrhythmia. She has a defibrillator-pacemaker that paces her heart all the time and works to keep her from having a heart attack.


Recently Karen has been to The Heart Center through Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University in New York City. The doctors there feel that Karen is a candidate for the Heart Transplant list. Prior to that however she will be fitted with a Left Ventricular Assistance Device (LVAD) which will help maintain her heart until a heart becomes available.


The trips back and forth to New York City for Karen and family members that must accompany her will be many and the travel/lodging expenses are already adding up. Medical expenses add more stress.
