Leadership in Historical Research
Donation protected
Two student groups at Kainalu have won prestigious state recognition for their History Day projects, and now have the opportunity to advance to Nationals. With a theme of "Rights and Responsibilities," three students researched, interviewed, and wrote a play called "Fred Korematsu's Fight for Freedom," and then presented their play about Japanese internment in WWII to the state. The other team of three students received The University of Hawai`i Center for Oral History award, for outstanding historical research using oral histories, as well as advancing to Nationals, with their documentary, "The Nuremberg Trials and The Geneva Convention."
In order to attend the 5 day event in Washington D.C. at University of Maryland, June 15-19, their goal is $12,000 for the six students (based on Hawaii History Day cost projections). They, with the school community, are working on service projects, putting in 500 hours of service to raise $5,000. They expect to raise about $1,000 by selling freeze pops after school and at sporting events. Those two areas will cover about half the trip with their hard work.
If you can provide a donation, that will help to purchase some of their meals while they attend, pay a portion of their hotel stay, or go toward the flight. Since we just found out on April 12th, we only have a small window to raise funds for this trip.
You can use your credit card on this site, mail a check to the family of the student you know, or mail your check to:
