An attack - in cold blood - left my son, Miguel, in intensive care for 4 days, many days more in the hospital and recuperation of many weeks ahead. Please read on:
On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, on the first day of February , at 3:00 in the lovely semi tropical town of Nayon in the Andes of Ecuador, my son, Miguel left his house to take a bus to put in extra hours at his workplace. At the bus stop he was approached by several men who told him "this is a robbery" . They did not wait for him to hand over his valuables, but immediately stabbed him deeply, and again and again four times as he tried to escape. Luckily he was known in that neighborhood and various neighbors and family provided immediate help to save his life.
He arrived in the hospital in time to get emergency care. He was gravely ill and bleeding profusely internally. Two simultaneous operations saved his life. Both lungs, his liver and diaphram were all perforated. A rib was fractured in the impact of the stabbings. By the wounds, it was ascertained that the knife was probably a kitchen knife, its blade 5 inches long and 1 1/2 wide.
The hospital was excellent in all ways,--except that it did not honor Ecuador's government medical insurance. He was handed a bill for $12,000 which we are all scurrying around trying to pay off.
As close family and friends we have raised about one half of this sum. But there is a long way to go. I just found out about this wonderful and compassionate site that can help this process, and ask you as friends and friends of friends to help my son Miguel pay off these bills and return to his normal life as soon as possible.
Miguel is at home recovering, in a fragile state, unable to work and pay these bills. Miguel has two little boys, 2 and 5 years old, his wife works until late everyday and his mother-in-law lives with them and helps with the children.
