Help Chris & Gloria Start A Family
Don protégé
Before reading the title of this GoFundMe page, many of you probably had no idea that Chris and I were facing infertility. This is a deeply personal thing for us to share with all of you and, as hard as it is for us to ask for help, Chris and I do need your assistance. So to begin, here is the story of our journey toward trying to conceive...
We have been actively trying to have a baby for nearly three years (since we got engaged in June of 2013) and have never gotten pregnant. After we got married, we decided it was time to start monitoring our cycle very closely and doing everything we could on our own (through diet, acupuncture, basal body tempature monitoring, ovulation testing, etc.) before seeing a specialist. As you can guess, this resulted in another year of frustration and disappointment.
Because I had already been diagnosed with endometriosis in college, we decided see an OB/GYN and start trying to figure out for certain why we were not getting pregnant. The gynecologist thought it might be that we just needed a little surgical help, which is when I had my second laparoscopy to assess the situation internally and clean out any endometriosis that may have formed since my last procedure. This was when I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS, a chronic illness and endocrine disease that prevents me from ovulating on my own and also causes numerous hormone related symptoms which make it difficult to conceive.
After surgery, three unsuccessful rounds of Clomid, and further heartbreak, our OB/GYN told us that I was still not ovulating and that our only option is IVF (which costs between $40,000-$45,000 for people our age).
After a few months of grieving the fact that I would never be able to naturally conceive and also giving my body a bit of a break, I decided to make an appointment with an IVF specialist. Unfortunately, I discovered that we cannot even begin with the process until we can pay all of the costs.
Our insurance pays for much of the diagnostic testing and blood work, but does not provide for any IVF-specific related procedures and, again because I am over 40, we do not qualify for any delayed payment programs.
My husband Chris is an extremely hard working man, but though we have both deeply desired our own children since we were small children ourselves, we simply cannot to try to tackle this expense by ourselves. We have applied for several small grants related to IVF, but they are extremely competitive and are rarely given to women over 40. We do not expect or demand help, nor would we want people to give who cannot afford it, but humbly share our story with you in the hopes that, together, we can raise the money neccessary for us to start the process of having our family.
We are beyond grateful to anyone who reads through our GoFundMe Page and decides to assist us. If you cannot make a donation, we thank you for taking the time to read our story and ask that you please share our page with others.
With much love and appreciation,
Chris & Gloria
