My mom, Ina, needs your help with medical expenses. About 6 months ago, LIPITOR started attacking her muscle cells.
She started to get weak with no apparent reason. She continued to get weaker as the doctors ran tests. She was sent to physical therapy thinking she was just weak from being sick with a cold in February. She had several falls and the last time was at her job. It was decided that she come live with me and I would take a leave of absence from work to take care of her. Memorial Day weekend I could no longer assist her because she had become so weak. She no longer had strength in her arms and legs. I had to call an ambulance and she was admitted to Kadlec.
While in the ER, the doctor discovered her muscle enzymes were extremely high which is a sign of muscle weakness. A muscle biopsy was done to try and determine the cause. She stayed at Kadlec for 3 and 1/2 weeks while the doctor waited for the results of the muscle biopsy. The results showed that her muscle cells were dead all because of the LIPITOR.
Mom was transferred to Richland Rehab to have intensive physical and occupational therapy to rebuild her muscle strength. We were told that she can get back to her old self but it is going to be a slow process. She will have to work hard and not give up. When my mom was admitted to Rehab, she could not do anything by herself. She could not roll over in bed or even sit on the edge of a bed, she could not walk or dress herself or even feed herself. With all the physical and occupational therapy, mom is finally making progress. She has been able to walk about 35 feet with a walker. She has been able to feed herself, groom herself even though she still needs help showering. She has been working on transferring to bed to a chair, etc.
Unfortunately, mom’s insurance will no longer cover her stay at Rehab . The insurance has authorized coverage of the physical and occupational therapy but not room and board. We are appealing but in the mean time she is paying out of pocket. We have applied for state assistance, however, mom would lose everything even though she would only need assistance for a short time. Mom needs the continued care of inpatient rehab because she still needs assistance getting in and out of bed, showering, etc.
My mom has helped so many people throughout her life and now she is the one needing the help. As many of you know my mom is a very independent person who was very healthy before all of this. A medication that was suppose to help her for her cholesterol, destroyed her. She is making huge strides toward recovery but is still needing the help.
