Ronald W. Alderdice Sci Scholarship

Ronnie Alderdice wasn't a famous man. He was a son, father and grandfather, the same as many of you. A family man in the truest sense. He was a farmer, which isn't particularly unusual in far western Kentucky. He loved animals and people and had a heart full of compassion for both. So, what was it that made him extraordinary? His humility. The fact he didn't even have to try. He simply was the greatest of men. And if these things were not enough, God gave him a passion for science and teaching. Hundreds - no thousands - of students came and went through the Ronnie Alderdice School of Life and Science in the Graves County Schools over many, many years. As we say in the south, he didn't cull it. He was steadfast and, above all, honest. I learned more about life in senior anatomy class than the other 11 school years combined. I left knowing scads of facts, but also what it meant to see a man committed to his wife and children. His stories were renowned. His teaching was practical in ways we no longer see in the world. He encouraged when needed; he prodded when necessary, and he was not beyond a butt-chewing if he felt it was warranted. He simply was the most genuine and best of men. We lost him yesterday, and the whole county mourns. We will remember him as he was - strong, loving and devoted. We will not forget all he taught us. We will keep his legacy of learning alive.
