If anyone knows me, they know my brother Walker. I grew up being known as Walker's sister. This annoyed me when I was younger but over the years I have become to adore it. And I should mention Will because it just wouldn't be fair to continue without mentioning his name...that is my other brother. So to clarify, I have gone through life being known as Will and Walker's sister.
About 8 years ago Walker was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease of the liver called PSC, primary sclerosing cholangitis. It was a scary diagnosis but not as frightening as the liver cancer that he has been battling since March 2018. On March 13, 2017, two days before our 40th birthday, Walker underwent a liver resection that lasted 6-7 hours. It was nerve wracking. The news we received was even worse. None of us even imagined that Walker would be up against cancer treatment.
So here we are, almost 8 months later, and Walker is still fighting to recover from his surgery on March 13. He still has a drain in place that needs to come out before beginning his additional treatment.
Through all of this he has remained a husband to Clare and a father to his two adorable girls, Una and Bea. He has been able to go back to teaching after a hiatus since his surgery but still struggles with his strength and stamina. He has gotten side tracked with several bouts of infections and a few never ending bile duct leaks. This has caused multiple trips back to Mass General in Boston and a constant roller coaster at home.
I never thought that I would say that I could speak from personal experience (but now I can) of how emotionally, physically and financially draining cancer treatment can be. It is absolutely exhausting.
It is with an overwhelming amount of love for Walker and for his family that I have chosen to develop this Fund. Any amount at all is appreciated.
