Oakwood Community Center is at a pivotal moment in its organizational evolution. For years you (and so many unpaid volunteers!) have been helping us slowly and intentionally build relationships and programming in Hillside North. Now we need your help to be able to pay for staff! If 40 people gave 100 we would hit our goal in no time, Same goes for 100 people giving $40 and 200 people donating $20! Can you help this amazing organization grow?
Sitting at the corner of Hoosick and 10th, OCC is currently housing over 24 different organizations and on any given night, someone from Hillside North is celebrating a birthday, a local dance team is practicing, people are listening to a guest speaker present on community organizing in India, or an ESL class is being taught (sometimes all of these are happening at the same time!) We host a food pantry, three churches, two dance groups, a bookkeeping cooperative, a rehearsal/band space that supports 7 local bands, and a monthly community meal and more! More staff support will help us build foundation as we continue to learn and grow in community.
Troy is also in a pivotal moment. As the rapid pace of downtown revitalization advances to the beat of “Troy is the new Brooklyn,” further separating the haves and the have nots, there are few spaces that serve the neighborhoods and bring people together. If we care about each other people, then we will take action on each other’s behalf. Oakwood is a place where meaningful relationships are made and strengthened. Let’s keep these relationships growing!
I am also at a pivotal moment. I turn 40 this year and after years of learning from and working for community, Oakwood Community Center is the place that most inspires me. I choose to invest in Oakwood because it represents the slow intentional change I believe in, and I am hoping you will too!
