Top Surgery

Hey guys, my name is Silas. For those of you that don’t know , I’m transgender & I have been transitioning since February 2016. (Transgender being , I was born female transitioning to male.)

 The earliest memory I have of feeling uncomfortable in my own body was at 8 years old.  I wasn’t sure what I was experiencing until I watched the movie “Boys Don’t Cry“ at 13-14 years old.  I related heavily to Brandon Teena.  It was then that I was finally able to put a name behind what I was feeling. (Movie is based on true events , wonderful movie if you haven’t seen it check it out sometime. )

Growing up in a religious household , I never thought that transitioning would be an option for me, honestly. I would try and keep it tucked away in the back of my mind. Every couple of years , it would resurface and would find myself doing research and reaching out to others who were transitioning about transitioning.

Finally, at age 25 I told my self I could no longer continue to live a life where I was hiding these feelings. They were becoming more prominent as the years passed. Had my first shot of testosterone February 2016. 

Since transitioning, I’ve been at my most confident and happiest state. Its one of the best decisions I‘ve made for my self. Coming out, I was lucky to receive so much support and love from friends and family alike. I appreciate every single one of you for that support. 

I’ve  been doing my research on surgeons for a few years now. I’ve finally set my heart on Dr. Medalie in Cleveland Ohio. Top surgery is a goal I’m hoping to achieve in 2020. (Still doing continuous research on different doctors, but I’d rather not sacrifice quality over a price tag. ) 

Top surgery is a procedure in which they remove breast tissue to acquire a male appearing chest. I’m hoping to achieve Keyhole or Peri-Areolar which is the least scar invasive of the  types of surgeries available. 

My insurance doesn’t cover the cost through my employment, so I’m trying to save to pay for this out of pocket. The cost of this surgery is $8,000. Aside from the surgery , I have to save for travel plans as this doctor is out of state, a week of lodging for after patient care & food amongst other small things. 

I’ve been contemplating starting a gofundme for a while , I’ve been a bit prideful and didn’t want to be judged for asking for help. At the end of the day , there is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.
