Dear Friends,
In Fall 2013, Daniel, an infant was brought to New Life Home where he was received by the nurses on duty and joined the other infants and toddlers who are cared for by the New Life staff and volunteers. Daniel thrived at NLHT, but after some time had passed, Daniel was not reaching the developmental milestones of his peers. After careful testing, they realized that Daniel was profoundly hearing impaired and it was recommended that the best option for Daniel was to receive a cochlear implant. In order for this to happen, however, Daniel would need to travel to another country where CI surgeries are regularly performed.
Last summer Casey Kennedy, working as an Amani Scholars’ Intern met Daniel and instantly the two connected. Casey has worked tirelessly since last summer to make the dream of Daniel coming to Indianapolis for Cochlear Implant surgery possible. We are asking for your support for Daniel to travel to Indianapolis for Cochlear Implant surgery. Through the incredible support of Dr. Ben Copeland, an ENT, and the Hear Indiana team, the costs associated with the cochlear implant surgery and audiology and speech-language therapy while in the U.S. are being donated. However, we are still in need of raising $25,000 for the Cochlear Implant device and for ongoing audiology and speech-language therapy when Daniel returns to Kenya. This is no small task as the cost of the device and ongoing therapy are expensive.
Daniel and Yvonne, his caregiver, will arrive in mid-May and live with our family. We cannot wait for both of them to get here! Please help us raise the necessary funds for Daniel’s Cochlear Implant. Your donation will help bring the gift of sound to this remarkable young boy. We will keep you posted as his journey continues.
