On Feb 20 my brother Mark Grosz had his car break down in Tarentum.  He couldn't get a ride home so he started walking across the bridge.  As he was walking, oncoming traffic passed just beside the walkway.  A roofing truck (Toth Roofing) passed by, when out of the truck flew several pieces of wood and debris striking Mark in several places including his head.  The driver was unaware and thank goodness a driver behind the truck followed him to the other side of the bridge and pulled the truck over.  They drove back across the bridge to see how he was doing.  He was knocked out cold and was bleeding from the head and several other injuries were apparent.  Thank goodness this person was able to witness and go back because a jersey barrier separated the walkway and no one would have seen him from the road and he could have been there for quite some time before he was found.  He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital where he was placed on life support.  He had a massive skull fracture, broken ribs, a puntured lung, dislocated shoulder and many other deep cuts.  The skull fracture and head injury being the most concerning, was immediately operated on to remove the fragments of skull along with removing a larger piece to allow for swelling of the brain.
My brother is not married and has no children.  His (our) parents have both passed.  He really has no one except me as a family member.  Unbelievably it took someone 6 days to locate me to tell me what had happened.  The case worker was able to find me from the hospital through facebook.  With all the resources the police have these days, they did not put forth much effort to locate me.  There was also no mention of it in the news or the papers.   I  immediatly got the police report which contained the information from the witness and luckily the roofing company name - Toth roofing.  I immediatly found  an attorney thinking this is total negligence.   I will help him fight since he is fighting for his life.
Doctors were unable to give me much of a prognosis as brain injuries are very unpredictable.  He may or may not recover, but likely will have some type of disability.  Things moved slowly, a trach was necessary along with a peg tube for feeding.  One  eye opened about 3 weeks later but no awareness or response.  As the days went on, he was taken off the ventillator, he could breathe on his own.  Insurance decided this was enough to move him to a lifecare facility so it could cost them less.  I hate insurance companies.  He was sent to Bellevue hospital where I discovered how much I hate nursing homes.  Communication with doctors was nowhere after many attempts to find out what is going on.  They started putting chairs on the side of the bed because of his involuntary movement.  At one point he fell out of the bed which really angered me -as a patient with such a skull fracture should be so much more closely monitored.  He has  a helmet that needs to be worn for safety now, as there is still a piece of his skull missing.  As more weeks passed, his therapy started as he was able to respond with a nod or a hand up.  The trach kept him from speaking anything.  Because they felt he would be ready for more rehab, he was sent to Mercy Hospital that has a floor designed for head trauma.  He went there and went through a few more weeks not of vigorous physical, occupational, and speech therapy.  He has come so far but is still having major cognitive issues, memory, and much confusion.  He does not recognize many people (including me at times) and can't remember my name or other names.  It is just awful to see how this has affected him.  He may never be able to work again, or take care of himself and his own affairs.
It has turned out that Toth roofing is grossly underinsured, and has literally no assets.  My brother will no doubt be faced with major medical bills and could possibly need some type of care for quite some time, possibly years to the rest of his life.
As far as my campaign for him, I am trying to raise funds that the immediate uncovered medical bills may be paid, as well as help with his mortgage  so he does not lose the house.  He is on long term disability now but does not even cover the bills for the house.  I would be so grateful for donations to help with the many costs that will need paid for.  It angers me that insurance companies even allow these limits, so in a case as bad as this, my brother loses out.  Literally no one is  being held liable for such a negligent accident.  Please help spread the word about this unfortunate circumstance to help my brother.  We are extremely grateful for every single person who reaches out to help.
