Lindsay's Addison's Service Dog

Hi...I am the mother of a 36 year old daughter named Lindsay who is beautiful both inside and out.

Please ask yourself if you have ever felt slugish, had brain fog, low blood sugar,  emotions are happy, sad, angry, agitated all within minutes, and had a crash time?

Lindsay feels slugish every day along with brain fog.  Lindsay's blood sugars drop constantly during each day and her emotions vary during the day along with having a crash time each and every day...please imagine having to endure this each and every day!  Would you please take the time to read the rest of this letter...

When Lindsay was young, I first noticed how she loved to help people.  In grade 3 she noticed a down syndrome  boy being bullied.  She decided to go to his teacher and ask if she could be of help and so it started...her life with helping people.

In high school, Lindsay made the choice to do her co-op class in a school for the disabled.  She became close to one of the students that had cerebral palsy who showed more signs of life when only Lindsay was around.  His parents asked for Lindsay to come into their home and work for their son.  Special arrangements had to be made since Lindsay did not work for an agency and she was so young.  Lindsay worked for their son for many years until she went to work in group homes  for the disabled.

Lindsay worked in the homes for 10 years, she called the clients "her kids".  She knew the needs  of everyone in the house from autism, mental disorders to aquired brain injuries, their likes and dislikes, their habits and moods....she was loved by each of them and her staff.

Lindsay did not leave her kids by choice, she was in an accident that was so horrid she had to come back home and live with her Dad and I and leave her kids behind forever.  It broke her heart.

Since Lindsay could no longer work with her kids due to her accident, she decided to go back to school to recieve her addiction's degree.  She was hired to work with the homeless after school.

Almost a year after she started working, Lindsay became so ill that I rushed her to emergency.  The doctor there told me if I had not taken her at that time we would have lost her.

My  beautiful, dearest, most giving daughter lay in the hospital in a coma.  She is 6 feet tall and at that time weighed 110 pounds, her body laying lifeless on the bed.

Hours and hours passed by and finally she opened her eyes.  I tried to hold back the tears, but how does a parent do that after thinking her child could die?  Still the doctors did not know exaclty why Lindsay went into a coma, until  one of the doctors spent hours at home in his books trying to figure it out.

Lindsay had Addison's Disease.  A rare disease where she does not produce cortisol.  http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/understanding-addisons-disease-basics

In this article it tells you someone with Addison's Disease can live a normal life.  I am telling you Lindsay's life is far from normal.

In the morning she can usually do cleaning, go to the gym and shop most days.  However when 2:00pm comes around Lindsay's blood sugars drop and her body shuts down and she crashes.  Every single day of her life for the last 4 years Lindsay has had to put up with low sugars anytime of the day and afternoons where she cannot move.  Every day Lindsay tests her sugar levels about 15-20 times a day since she cannot feel when her sugar levels drop.

We recently read an article on service dogs (Medical Sniffer Dogs), who are trained to detect low sugars and low cortisol levels.   I talked with the owner, thinking of course that her Dad and I could spare a thousand dollars or so, but when I called and asked the price, I just about fell off of my chair!  The cost of the dog with all the training that comes with it will be $15,000.00!!!  If I had an able body, I would be out working, but I have had type 1  diabetes for 48 years, along with a kidney transplant, heart attack, strokes and a few other diseases because of the diabetes, therefore if not for these health issues, I would go and work and earn the money myself.

Lindsay has had a tough life due to her biological father disappearing at the age of 14 and telling her while I was on dialysis that I was going to die and that he had found the woman of his dreams!  He just passed away without even trying to make things right with her brother and her.  Lindsay has been by my side every step of the way through all my health challenges.

If Lindsay could get the funds to have a service dog, it would change her life.  She would not have to worry during the night thinking that her sugars could go so low she may not wake, she could go out side alone, or to the market on her own.  When we go out anywhere, she has to check her sugars many times since she cannot feel when her blood sugars drop.  Lindsay would become a new person.  At present I must take Lindsay everywhere.  It is too frightening to think about her being alone with her anxiety that comes with Addison's  and her sugars going low without knowing.

Both Lindsay and myself  would be so grateful if you could lend us a hand...I cannot even explain the relief and change in Lindsay's life, if we were able to make our goal.  This wonderful giving person that has worked her whole life giving to others would benefit from your kindness.  Many donations in small amounts are more than welcome since it all adds up.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart in advance for your time and kindness and what ever donation you can spare.
