Improving birth at Bwindi

Donation protected

I'm Rachel Jamison, a midwife and mother of two living in Uganda with my family where I am blessed to serve at Bwindi Community Hospital. I work in the maternity ward with many amazing midwives and an obstetrician who faithfully serve the women in our community.

On Average, 115 mothers a month deliver their babies at Bwindi Community Hospital.

This is one of four beds that countless women have labored on, and where we midwives welcome new lives in Uganda each day. The blue and white curtains providing "privacy" to laboring moms have seen better days. Not only are they torn, they fail to provide much if any privacy as people walk past the rooms and caregivers wander in and out of the ward.

Every woman who delivers here, like every hospital in Uganda, is expected to bring her own food, her own caregiver, baby clothes, blankets for drying, a basin, soap for cleaning, toilet paper, etc. Each mother is even expected to provide her own sheets and blankets for laboring and for sleeping in the postnatal ward after delivery. Most of our mothers are very poor- living on less than $1 a day. They may not even come with blankets to dry their baby and certainly no sheets on which to sleep.

Last week the staff from maternity met to discuss what dreams we have for the ward, what they would like to see happen. The number one thing that came up was the desire that women would feel cared for by their experience at the hospital. They wished that we could provide mothers with  beds which were not broken, curtains that provided privacy, sheets for the patients beds, a warmer which could keep a newborn from becoming hypothermic- Basic things. But things which could change birthing experiences for thousands of mothers and their newborn babies each year.

With your help I would love to bless the hospital and in turn hundreds of pregnant mothers in our community by purchasing...

  4 new labor beds,
New curtains to separate labor rooms,
Sheets: enough for all the beds in postnatal, post op, and labor ward,
A warmer, ambu bag and equipment for our resuscitation station,

Every women and child matters no matter where she lives or how much money she has. This is what I want to communicate with your help!
