Stand With Sean

Story

One of the most selfless, big-hearted and funniest people you will ever meet is desperately in need of financial support to cover medical expenses. He is my big brother, Robert “Sean” Curfman. My name is Shannon and we, along with our mom Colleen, are a small, tight-knit family who will do whatever necessary for each other, but we are not accustomed to asking for help. However, after exhausting various avenues it has become obvious that we will not be able to cover all of Sean’s mounting medical and living expenses. That is why we are reaching out for help.  Six months ago Sean moved back to California to be with his mom and me after 23 years living in North Dakota. We were all so excited! We hugged a lot, watched movies, went to the beach, ate, laughed and shared stories, catching up on lost “hang-out” time. But just 10 days after his arrival, Sean suffered a severe seizure that put him on a mental and physical rollercoaster. During that time he became blind in his right eye, weakened on his right side and his right arm shook uncontrollably. He needed help walking, bathing, and doing basic hygiene. He could not speak, read, nor write.  He suffered memory loss and recall. He didn’t know anyone’s names including his own and those of his children. Watching my 54-year old brother, reduced to tears was heartbreaking. In his life Sean has fought brain cancer with all of its chemo and radiation and come out the other side to be a foster parent to over 25 children in a 7-year period. He volunteers at his church and is always the first person to offer help, whether it’s buying lunch for the car behind him in the drive thru line or helping someone pack and move. He is always there - for me, our mom, his children, his friends, and strangers-in-need. He is one of the best people I know. He is my greatest teacher. Over the last six months he has been in and out of hospitals for a total of 6 weeks. He has been in acute care rehab facilities for the last 2 months and has finally started out-patient rehab care to continue trying to regain all of his former motor skills, balance and speech. He has improved greatly but still has a long way to go before he can drive, work or live on his own again.  The money he’d saved to get himself settled here is now gone. He is ineligible for state disability as North Dakota does not have that and he is not eligible for federal disability for another 6 months from now. So he’s had no income since this happened in November. So I humbly ask on Sean's behalf that you make a financial contribution to help get him through this difficult time. I invite you to share in his journey to recovery. Please share this with as many people as possible via email, facebook, twitter, your Church communities, or whatever means you have. If you can find it in your heart to help, we would greatly appreciate it. And we thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support.
