COVID-19 URGENT APPEAL

Donación protegida
When Covid-19 hit Eswatini in April you, our donors, raised two thousand five hundred euro to feed the poorest of the poor in a small little country in Africa. Your big soft hearts responded to our plea for help when we needed it most. Lockdowns affected people globally but in Eswatini people selling fruit and clothing, etc. in markets were banned from doing so for fear of contamination. This quickly cut off the most vulnerable.  Due to high incidence of HIV/AIDS in the past, we have encountered gogos who are taking care of up to 20 children while existing in stick and mud huts. Domestic and factory workers earning three to four euros a day lost their jobs because of travel restrictions.

Phumelela talked to community elders and activists and the most at risk were identified. Food parcels, sanitizers and rent allowances were distributed to ensure distribution to those who needed it most. People living with disabilities, elderly and children living alone, mothers with little mouths to feed came in groups of 50 and left with enough food for a month at a time on their shoulders. You, the donor, made that happen.

To ensure sustainable support through further lockdowns, our team developed a micro business program to help families grow their own vegetables, raise chickens and pigs, make and sell soap and polish and other necessities to sell to their communities. Supplying seedlings enabled women to create urban gardens and grow spinach, beetroot, onions, lettuce, etc. to sell and self-consumption, also ensuring a healthy diet to offset disease.

Empowering people to be self-sufficient in a sustainable way gives them hope and pride in their own achievements and hopefully ensures that when challenges of lockdowns come again, they will be able to feed their families.
A total of 643 people were benefited from our two food distributions and we have an ongoing program to pay rent for families to offset homelessness. Our micro business project is active and beneficiaries are visited regularly for support and advice.

Thank you again for the support you gave as, without your help, none of the above would be possible.

As an added note, the Diplomatic Corps of Eswatini, Taiwanese Embassy, Queens Commonwealth Trust, all generously supported our covid-19 programs through food parcels, providing medical equipment for people living with disabilities and large donations of rice which we were able to share with other charitable organisations.

Wishing all our friends of Phumelela a safe and peaceful Christmas.
