The last 13 days have been quite a roller coaster. Two weeks ago Megan, Jeff, and Melanie were driving home from PA to Colorado when Megan suffered a series of seizures in the Eisenhower Tunnel. We’re still unsure what caused the seizures, but we know it left severe brain damage. We initially were given a poor prognosis for recovery. We had a lot of questions and thought the prognosis was given way too quickly. A couple of days ago Megan began showing us little pieces that she was still very much with us - always being her stubborn independent self, making movements when you ask (not perfect, but it’s clearly purposeful), crying at emotional moments, and even laughing at our jokes. Through second opinions, we found out that she has a promising chance of having a high quality life with rehabilitation and therapy in the coming months. We created an account on Caring Bridge that has much more detail about her journey than I described here.
A lot of people have been asking about Megan, so we plan on updating our Caring Bridge website (https://caringbridge.org/visit/meganbickert2) throughout her recovery to keep everyone updated. It is clear through all of this how loved Megan is to her family, friends, and community. She is a strong, feisty, hip, and selfless young lady.
Our family has been staying in Denver as we find out more about what rehab center is best for her. Many have asked how they can help. We are going week by week at this point as we look to secure a long term rehab center, but are in need of financial support to help with lodging and transportation costs associated with traveling and staying in Denver.
Our original goal of $1500 was to help us get through the next couple weeks of housing costs until we can find something longer term. We have far surpassed that goal. Considering the support we are continuing to receive and our anticipation that this recovery will last many months, if not years, we will continue to raise our goal.
We are currently staying at Marriott, directly across from the hospital which has been very convenient. Marriott points are very helpful as well over the next couple weeks as well. You can contact Jeff directly about this.
The family is incredibly appreciative of your continued support and we will continue to update everyone as Megan continues her journey toward recovery. The money being donated will continue being used to help differ family costs for future medical bills and transportation and lodging to allow family to spend time with Megan. A large portion of recovery is about the support you receive and Megan couldn’t do this without your help.
