100-Ton Challenge to Benefit Hospitality Workers

100-Ton Challenge to Benefit Tucson Tourism/Hospitality Workers

Our goal is to raise $12,500 during the holiday season to provide 5 Tucson-area families/individuals working in tourism and hospitality with a stimulus check of $2,500 and a little hope in these challenging times.  If we exceed our fundraising goal, we will donate the proceeds to additional families.

We are planning to start lifting Thursday night, Dec. 10, 2020 and wrap up by late afternoon on Friday, Dec. 11.  Donations will be accepted through Dec. 17.

We can all LIFT each other up in this time of unprecedented need.  Unfortunately, many workers from the tourism and hospitality/restaurant industries have been laid off, furloughed, or seen their jobs eliminated.

Southern Arizona’s tourism industry has been devastated by COVID-19 with industry workers struggling to pay rent, feed their families and manage healthcare issues.  Tourism is one of our region’s biggest industries, employing 25,000 in Pima County and generating $2.6 billion in visitor spending annually.  Many working in this field are facing tremendous hardships, however.

One recipient from this challenge is a housekeeper at a Tucson hotel, who was laid off from March through October.  Her adult daughter recently passed away from COVID-19 impacts.  Another recipient is a hotel laundry attendant, who has been laid off since April.  She was involved recently in a horrific automobile accident that left her with a broken neck and multiple fractures throughout her body.

My son, Matt Vaughan, and I, plus a friend in Colorado, Colin Buchanan, and Brent DeRaad, CEO of Visit Tucson, want to pay it forward by taking on the 100-TON CHALLENGE (EACH LIFTING 200,000 POUNDS IN 24 HOURS—the equivalent of 17 elephants!) to raise funds for families in need.  Visit Tucson will be the program coordinator to ensure all net funds, after GoFundMe’s limited expenses are paid, go directly to industry workers in need.

We are fortunate to have multiple people working in the industry, including Amber Harkin of Lodging Dynamics Hospitality Group and Hope Smyth of Visit Tucson, partner to complete the final 100 tons.  We will lift a combined total of ONE MILLION POUNDS in 24 hours, if successful.

Again, we are planning to start lifting Thursday night, Dec. 10, 2020 and wrap up by late afternoon on Friday, Dec. 11.  Donations will be accepted through Dec. 17.

Please join us in this effort by pledging what is most comfortable and know that all donations are deeply appreciated.  Click the Donate Now button to pledge and please share with your own network of contacts, if appropriate, to help us LIFT UP those dedicated tourism and hospitality workers.
