DJ School UK

Donation protected
DJ School UK is a non-profit organisation run by a tiny team of dedicated DJs, Tutors, Youth-workers and volunteers. To make our projects even more exciting we regularly team up with other non-profit partners who deliver breakdancing, graffiti art, or rapping and beatboxing.

Over the last 6 years we have re-invested every spare penny in new equipment, so that we can now help more kids than ever - with up to 16 kids at any time in our after school clubs and other sessions.

We believe:

1) DJs are musicians.

2) The turntable is a musical instrument.

3) Learning to DJ can help people develop self-confidence, self-efficacy, communication, team-work and musical skills.

4) DJing is easy and accessible at first but can be as hard as you can handle. It is fun, rewarding, a pathway into all music and can lead to a wide range of careers.

We have three clear missions:

1) Supply accessible, engaging and educational DJ and Music Production tuition, projects and workshops.

2) Use our activities to raise self-esteem and teach life-skills to the hard to reach, disadvantaged or otherwise vulnerable.

3) Raise the profile of our art form by formalising accreditation for DJs as musicians to levels equivalent to traditional instrumentalists.

It doesn't matter to us whether a child wants to be a stadium celebrity or a karaoke dj - we respect all ages and abilities and will show anyone as much as they want to know. We don't avoid any genres or techniques - we believe all DJs should be able to express themselves whether they love hiphop, EDM, drill, grime, punk or even opera.

Your donations will be used to support those young people who cannot afford our services or who will benefit most.

We believe every child and young person deserves the chance to try out music and play creatively. Austerity measures and the current education system make access to music experiences harder and harder for many young people.
All applicants to DJ School UK are means-tested and only pay if they can. For those who can’t pay we use the money paid by those who can, or we apply for funds from the creative and educational sectors.

Testimonials:

"This is the only thing these boys leave the unit for. Everyone else is out on christmas trips for final week but these 4 wanted to stay with us." From a teacher at a Pupil Referral Unit we work with regularly.

"Jim was incredibly patient with me as, with my autism, I was keen to try and achieve things quickly, rather than take things a step at a time and perfect my skills over time. It was always a real pleasure coming to the lessons and I really looked forward to them each time." Ex-Student.

"You are a perfect example of what a true partner is, really promoting how a joined up offer adds value to an individual organisation's offer.” From our partners at the Leeds Music Hub.

"I’m attending university in Bristol to study Electronic Music Production. I immensely appreciate the support that DJSchool UK gave me in the early stages. I honestly believe I could have lacked the confidence to enter this career path if I had not attended DJ School." Ex-Student.

Our future aims include:

1) Develop a nationwide network of trusted and highly skilled DJ tutors so when anyone contacts us, we can refer them to someone reliable.

2) Develop graded exams and more robust qualifications so young DJs can have their achievements formally recognised at the same level as other musicians.

3) Develop our network of opportunities so people we have taught can move into work experience, apprenticeships, further education or employment.

What your donation can buy:

£50 = one hour private tuition session for a young person with special educational needs.
£165 = two hours' private tuition and ten sessions in one of our after school clubs.
£199 = three hours' private tuition and ten sessions in one of our after school clubs.
£145 = two hour workshop for a group of up to 8 young people.
£90,000 = one whole year at our current outputs. If we raise this it frees our team from sourcing and applying for other grants meaning we will have extra time to grow.
