More information about Seabee Museum and Memorial Park (Chapel in the Pines): The Seabee Museum and Memorial Park preserves the history of the US Navy Seabees at their original home. On the grounds can be seen the concrete Chapel-in-the-Pines, built by Seabees in 1960, and the famous 3,200-pound steel Seabee statue that stood at Gate 1 of the former Navy Base. It also provides displays of several vintage Quonset Hut developed at this base to support the military in WW II. With the base's closure in 1994, the Chapel fell by the wayside. In 1999 a group of Seabees eager to save their heritage and preserve the history embarked on creating the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park grounds. The grounds we see today officially opened in 2014. This unique building was designed and built by Seabees homeported here in Davisville between 1960 and 1963; throughout the years, many young Seabees were married and had their children baptized in the Chapel and made their peace before deploying Vietnam. After years of neglect and water damage to the interior walls, a new roof was installed on the Chapel in 2017 by the Quonset Development Corp before turning the building over to the Seabee museum new lighting, flooring and complete repaint is needed of the interior and exterior a new heat system is also required. We ask your help in preserving a piece of Rhode Island history, more importantly, a bit of US NAVY Seabee history. We invite you to come and be a part of something special.
