Cure HD
My name is Leilani Dunmoyer and I live in Sacramento, CA. I'm a wife, mother, marathon runner, and have a passion to find a cure for HD. This is my 3rd fundraiser marathon for Huntington's Disease (HD). It has been four years since I raised money by running the New York City Marathon, so it's time again! This time I'm planning on running our local Sacramento marathon (CIM) on December 2nd 2018 to raise funds for our local HDSA chapter through UCDavis' Center of Excellence . These doctors and caregivers have taken care of my mother and now my brother for many years, and are like family to us.

HD is a genetic disease that is described as ALS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's rolled into one. It affects the ability to walk, talk, reason and swallow, and currently there is no cure. If a person has the HD gene, they will eventually develop the disease. Average age onset is between 35 - 50 years old. If a person has HD their offspring has a 50% chance of having the disease. My mother was diagnosed in 2009, and my brother was diagnosed a couple of years ago. I tested positive for the gene also, which means not only will I one day develop the disease; each of my three children also have a 50% chance of having it too.

I am so grateful for my supportive friends and family, a great God that loves me, and also my running which keeps me healthy and will help me fend off symptoms for as long as possible. Running to raise money and awareness for HD benefits me physically, but also provides a platform to tell people what HD is, and to raise funds for research and awareness.The really exciting news is that for the first time we are on the brink of a potential treatment to stop the progress of HD. There is a phase 3 clinical trial starting soon that has tremendous promise. Dan and I had the great pleasure of attending the national conference this year in Los Angeles.
Also exciting for me is the fact that my daughter Heather (age 24) will be running this as her first marathon! My sister Erika in Seattle also has joined the team!
