Memorial Garden For Craig Michael
Last Saturday coming back from a long day at the market, my 11 year was first choked up then flat out crying, and trying to process the death of a young man named Craig. He was a part of our market community as he was interning with Jessi, owner of Juicy Roots Farm, and a vendor at Dig Local.
When I went to give my friend Jessi a hug my daughter had followed me. But she wasn’t able to muster up the courage to say anything to Jessi at the time. Later on my daughter decided all on her own to go back because she wanted Jessi to know that she was sharing her sadness.
As an intern, Craig had been working side by side with Jessi since last year. He had become a part of her family, and like a big brother to her little boys. At the market all of us got used to Craig’s charming, smiling face behind the counter at Juicy Roots.
That is why it has become so very hard for us to reconcile how someone like that would have chosen to end his own life.
Talking to my 11 year old, I also tried to make sense of the frail nature of mental health, and maladies like depression. In the truck on our way home we talked about our own roles and simple things we can do to change the course of human condition in our communities. That is when I offered to her that we need to look people in the eye when we ask them how are you, we need to hug people tighter and longer so they can still feel the warmth from it when they are being chilled by depressing thoughts.
In the end, I told her that I was so proud of her for going and talking to Jessi and giving her a hug. I told her that is what people who are left behind need, a hug, a touch, a check-in. We need to know that there’s a community of people who will helps us get through tough times.
We are starting a gofundme page to help Juicy Roots Farm and Jessi in this quest to remember Craig, and find healing. All funds raised will go toward installing a meditation center that is surrounded by fruit trees and pollinator plants at Juicy Roots Farm. It would feed all the souls that come together to break grounds for this garden, over the years to watch it flourish, to watch its healing powder over the people affected by Craig's suicide.
As a donor, Jessi and her family will invite you to the farm for the installation of this memorial garden. You are also welcome and encouraged to join in the meditation session that Jessi plans to hold each year to remember the contributions Craig Michael Faix made to turn this ground into a flourishing farm. Hopefully building a healing space will help continue part of his mission on this planet.
All donations made to Dig Local here are tax deductible and 100% will go to Juicy Roots for the installation of this memorial garden for Craig.
