In the midst of the COVID pandemic, I made the hard decision to leave my newborn son and wife in California to be in Maryland with my Mom after she was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. We wanted to get my Mom to the Bay Area, where we lived, so she could receive treatment at UCSF, one of the best facilities in the world for pancreatic cancer treatment, and to meet her grandson for the first time. However, flying in commercial jets for cancer patients is perilous even when there isn't a pandemic; in the midst of the pandemic, before vaccines had been rolled out, it was unthinkable. On top of that, the disease had left my Mom incredibly weak and tired, unable to exert the energy needed to go on a regular flight. Private or charter flights coast-to-coast, meanwhile, were well beyond our reach as a family. So, we faced the prospect of a long-term separation and the inability to get my Mom to the treatment she needed.
My family and I tried desperately to find a solution for months, reaching out to dozens of private jet companies who unfortunately couldn't offer compassion services, trying to see if I could plan an RV journey to drive coast-to-coast while pausing often for my Mom, and looking at coast-to-coast train tickets. These efforts were all fruitless until I found CAN. Corporate Angel Network offered an amazing lifeline and flew my Mom out for treatment in UCSF in a safe corporate jet manned with just the pilots and one other cancer patient, with none of the risks of flying commercial and in amazing comfort throughout the long-journey. After four months of being separated, it meant the world to me to see my wife and baby again and to have the opportunity to see my Mom with my son for the first time. Being with her grandchildren has lifted my Mom's spirit and motivation in untold ways as she soldiers on in treatment. I cannot thank CAN enough for this amazing service.
