CancerCare's Longest Day of Golf

The Longest Day of Golf gives our most dedicated lovers of the sport the opportunity to test their limits and raise substantial funds and awareness for CancerCare, while giving them bragging rights for completing a golf marathon like no other. Participants are offered a list of private golf courses to play, along with available dates.

Having raised over $3 million since 1994, CancerCare's Longest Day of Golf has been a unique event that brings golfers together to compete against each other to complete as many holes as possible in one full day. Most golfers play 100 holes or more!

CancerCare’s goal is to help people undergoing cancer treatment keep and care for their dogs and cats throughout cancer treatment.

The CancerCare Pet Assistance & Wellness (PAW) Program addresses the distinct needs of people with cancer who share their home with a cat and/or dog. The program will enable people living with cancer and their loved ones to obtain care for their pets during the emotional, physical, and financial challenges of cancer treatment. CancerCare’s Hopeline (800-813-HOPE)

will be the entry point to the program’s full array of free support services.

 

Why is the PAW Program Needed?

Although caring for pets while undergoing cancer treatment can be challenging, pets can provide a host of benefits to people diagnosed with cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and feelings of loneliness, while increasing physical activity through daily walks and/or play sessions.

 

Features of the Program

Upon launch this national program, uniquely designed to provide free support services to cancer patients struggling to care for their pets during their treatment, will be comprised of the following core services:

•    Financial assistance for qualified patients who are pet owners undergoing active treatment for expenses, including pet food; pet walking/sitting and other caregiving services; boarding

fees; veterinarian expenses including vaccinations and appointment fees; flea, tick and heartworm prevention; medications; and lab fees.

•    Educational webcasts focused on caring for pets throughout the cancer journey, to cover topics such as how to care for one’s pet during cancer treatment, guidance on how to reduce one’s risk of infection from pets, as well as finding local support programs.

•    Wide dissemination of print/digital materials specific to pet care and self-care during cancer treatment, including a database of resources.

•    Free counseling services for both people with cancer and their loved ones.
