UPDATE from 12/29: We are pleased to share that we have surgery scheduled for Tommy on Monday, January 5th! The phenomenal people at Animal Care Center of Castle Pines were able to get him on the schedule right away, and also worked things out so that his estimate is $2997! Thus far we have spent $268, so we have lowered our goal amount from $3500 to $3300 -- and we are NEARLY there.

Today, we learned that in addition to his negligent amputation, he also had post-surgical complications that have left him with a mass in his leg likely comprised of clotted blood and fibrous tissue. That will need to be removed in addition to the remainder of his femur and any bone fragments.

Tommy has a long road ahead of him. We are blown away by the support he has already received, and are hopeful we can receive just a little bit more to cover his costs.

Original Post from 12/27: Sweet Tommy’s life began with heartbreak. He was found on the side of the road in Puerto Rico with his litter—beside the body of his mother, who had been struck and killed by a car.

Tiny Tommy had also been hit. His injuries were severe, and veterinarians determined that his broken leg could not be saved. Amputation was recommended, and he bravely underwent surgery on December 1, 2025. He recovered well at first, had his stitches removed on December 19, and flew all the way to Colorado on December 20 to start the next chapter of his life. Upon arrival in Colorado, things were off to a great start - he particularly enjoyed his new foster siblings and their comfy beds!

Tragically, on Christmas Day, Tommy’s incision began to reopen and seep fluid. We were so thankful that the people at Plum Creek Veterinary Services were able to get us in right away on December 26, where devastating news was discovered: Tommy was the victim of a botched amputation. Bones and bone fragments were left behind at the amputation site, including one sharp point that is causing him pain and preventing proper healing. He now urgently needs a second corrective surgery so he can heal fully and live without discomfort.

Tommy is only four months old. Despite everything he has endured, he is pure light—affectionate, joyful, and full of love. While we are heartbroken that his tiny body must face another surgery, we are unwavering in our commitment to him. Tommy deserves a future that is pain-free, playful, and full of the happiness every puppy should know.

Please consider donating to support Tommy’s urgent surgery and recovery. Your generosity will give this sweet boy the chance to heal properly and live the life he so deeply deserves.

Help Juanita Heal: Her Recovery Journey Continues

One year ago, we shared the story of a little dog in Puerto Rico who had nearly given up hope. Juanita was found lying on the side of the road in the blistering heat, unable to move after being hit by a car. She had multiple fractures in her pelvis and femur, and her tail was so badly damaged it required amputation. Someone had left a solo cup with water nearby, but she was too broken and weak to reach it. Cars drove past her for days, and when Ruby finally arrived to rescue her, she could barely lift her head. The look in her eyes said it all—she had been waiting for someone to finally care.

Thanks to the generosity of so many kind people, we were able to get Juanita into emergency surgery and start her on the long path toward recovery. Against all odds, she survived. Our on the ground director in Puerto Rico, Ruby, spent many long days and nights caring for Juanita through those first few scary months. Once she was stable enough, she made the journey from Puerto Rico to Colorado, where our rescue founder, Ela, welcomed her into her home.

From the beginning, Juanita was extremely shy and fearful around people, but with patience, love, and the help of the volunteers, a dedicated trainer and the community, she has made incredible progress. She also spent some time being cared for by a dedicated team member Wes, who had to earn her trust slowly! She loves car rides and is a treat lover at her core, learning quickly to love Starbucks for their pupcups. She has also found comfort and confidence living alongside other dogs (she loves them dearly and has even been known to “manage” puppies like a little boss!)

But Juanita’s story isn’t over yet. Earlier this year, Juanita needed another surgery on her leg to support her recovery and give her the best chance at a healthy future. She has been incredibly brave through every procedure, every setback, and every step forward. While she continues to improve, her medical costs have added up significantly once again. Between her additional surgery, ongoing care, training, and recovery, the expenses have exceeded what our small rescue can cover on our own.

We are asking for your help once more so that Juanita can continue her journey toward full health and, ultimately, toward finding her forever home. She has already endured so much—pain, fear, surgeries, and uncertainty—but she continues to surprise us with her resilience and her spirit.

Your support changed the course of Juanita’s life once before. With your help again, every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to giving Juanita the life she deserves: one filled with love, security, and a family to call her own. And with every dog we are able to help recover and place in a loving home, makes space for another one to be rescued.

Thank you for believing in her and for standing with us as we help Juanita heal, one step at a time.
