A Dreamer's Trip to the Border

Donation protected
Dear families, friends, and allies,

Several DACAmented Edgewood College students and faculty have come together to establish the Leadership Institute for Border Research and Education (LIBRE) Trip. This trip will take place in the border state of Arizona from January 8-14, 2017. *Please note that these dates were strategically selected as it may be the last time that DACAmented students are able to safely travel within the United States before Trump takes the office.

While on the trip DACAmented students and faculty will be networking with local organizations to learn about the work they do within the immigrant community to bring them back to their community of Madison, WI. They will also be visiting the current wall that is very symbolic for all undocumented immigrants. It represents a physical separation that prohibits people from seeing their loved ones, achieving their dreams, and being truly free.

As many of you may know, a wave of fear has hit the immigrant community post president-elect Donald Trump’s victory. Through his entire campaign, Trump has promised to deport the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living within the United States. Many things are currently at risk, including families being separated and the removal of DACA.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) currently provides a work permit and deportation relief for those that arrived to the United States before the age of 16. They must also meet other requirements which include but are not limited to passing extensive background checks, being currently enrolled in school or have graduated, and must have been present in the United states as of June 15, 2007. With the help of DACA many undocumented immigrants that arrived here as children have been able to live without fear, get jobs, obtain a driver’s license, travel within the United States, and much more.

We are reaching out to our families, friends, and allies to make this trip possible. We will be reporting back to our local community what we saw and learned, and will continue strengthening networks with those we have met in Arizona. We have estimated that the cost of this trip will be approximately $8,000 for all 7 students and staff to attend. However, we have a goal of $10,000 as we are hoping to donate the remaining funds to a scholarship that is given to an undocumented student.

We hope you are all able to help us keep our community safe.
