Volunteering Abroad in Guatemala
Hi! I am an avid volunteer wanting to make a difference both inside and outside of my community.
I am embarking on a trip to Chixal, Guatemala in November of 2016 with fellow Laurier Alumni in partnership with the wonderful Students Offering Support (SOS) where we will assist with the building of a computer lab at a local, rural school. The goal of the computer lab is to give primary school children access to technological resources. This will create more opportunities for learning, with the final goal to better prepare students for the workforce thus improving their overall quality of life. This project will directly benefit 417 children (216 girls and 200 boys).
The community relies on agricultural production as a source of income particularly during harvest season in November and December. Pottery is another source of income for this population, however many inhabitants often struggle to meet survival needs. The average household income in Chixal is $150 USD/month.
Funds raised will assist with program fees and flights as well as care packages for some of the children and families I expect to connect with in Chixal. Volunteers in this program will be housed at the school and meals will be provided by local families so luxurious accommodations will not be part of this venture. Any help would be very much appreciated and you know you can count on me to give and get the very most out of this experience!
Thank you, from the very depths of my heart, for your donation - no matter the amount!
Love,
Sheena
