 GREEN BAY, WI
Friends of Steve Gay and Green Bay East High School Class of 1982,

Our friend and classmate, Steve Gay, has been  diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. After learning about Steve’s diagnosis, we reached out to Steve. He has handled the news as well as can be expected and, other than feeling a bit more tired than usual, he is doing well.

Many of us have been touched by cancer within our own families and circles of friends. While there is often a feeling of helplessness, a diagnosis can also galvanize people to pull together to support those challenged. Several of us put our heads together to find some ways to support Steve, as well as bring more awareness to the treatment of cancer. One idea is participating in the Green Bay Marathon this coming spring.

We have decided to dust off our running shoes and run a marathon relay. We signed up as a team (Running for Steve Team 1) with the hope that others will join our 50ish bodies as we run for Steve. Relay teams can include 2 to 5 participants and registration is currently wide open. Not only will it be a way for us to put the remote down and exercise a bit more, but it will also allow us to show our support for Steve while raising awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Steve has been a cornerstone for our class with his omnipresence near Lambeau Field at Packer games with his trademark Big G van. The Big G continues to be a common meeting place for many to catch up with friends and classmates. Steve has been instrumental in keeping many of us in touch with each other through the years.

Steve has promised to have the Big G parked near the finish line of the Green Bay Marathon. Our hope is to “hydrate” with many the evening before and the afternoon after the run in or near the Lambeau parking lot. We think it will be fun to come together and reconnect, show Steve a lot of support, and raise some funds and awareness for blood-borne cancers.

We hope that you will participate with us. Here’s how:

* Form a team and run the relay with us on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

*Contribute to the Go Fund Me account. The money raised will be presented to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Steve.

* Share Steve's GoFundMe link with your friends and family.

May 2018 Update:
Dear Friends of Steve Gay.
Last Sunday, April 29th, Steve was taken to St. Vincent’s hospital in Green Bay with severe headaches. It was determined that Steve had a large blood clot and that it was causing a bleed in brain. He was admitted to the ICU to determine a course of action. Due to the medications and treatments he is on for his leukemia, an operation was not possible. Medication was provided to minimize the swelling caused by the bleed. Unfortunately, at this time there is no corrective measures possible to repair the clot or to further treat his leukemia. After spending most of the week in ICU, Steve requested to go home to be more comfortable. On Saturday, May 5th he was transported home and is now under the care of the local Hospice provider. Over the weekend, all of Steve’s brothers and sisters came in from across the country to spend time with him.

On a brighter note, while in the hospital, Steve fulfilled his promise to Jessica and they were married on Wednesday May 2nd in the chapel at St. Vincent’s hospital. Both Steve and Jessica were very grateful to those who were able to attend on a short notice (a couple of hours).

Steve wanted us to share the news of his condition and also the celebration of his marriage with everyone. Please keep Steve and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Should you wish to reach out to Steve, he and Jessica have asked that you utilize his Thebigg1966@yahoo.com email address. He would love to have his friends email old pictures and stories of Steve. Please respect their wishes for privacy and to utilize email to reach out to them.

FYI - We are not seeking further donations. Just utilizing this site to help spread the word.

Sincerely,
Rob, Dan, Chris, Don and John
