love one another

Shirley Bachelder had a bucket list. That’s where this story begins and honestly, I don’t know where it ends! What I do know, is that my mother’s words have touched many people. Her three simple words… love one another.

Shirley had a vision to air her own television commercial and her Sunday school class at Christ United Methodist Church made it happen! Reporter, Terry Bulger of WSMV-Channel 4 (Franklin) visited Shirley at The Manor at Steeplechase and did a wonderful feature story about her bucket list. At the end, he closed with her :05 second commercial. Since then, life for the 94 year spitfire has been a festival of cards, flowers, letters, and visitors from all over the country. Shirley’s three simple words grew to encompass priceless tales of faith, of letting people in and recognizing when they need to know they are loved.

“I think that people who have learned to love do so in giving and in doing and in telling. There are some people that need to be told that they are loved and it is up to you to tell them.” Shirley Bachelder

Her inspirations always come from God. She considers herself a willing messenger. Willing to hear his words and carry out his instruction. With that, Shirley clarifies that her message is for everyone, “I don’t care what religion they are or what denomination. I think that loving one another is the primary focus of God’s word."

During a recent interview Shirley coined a new phrase and this has become our mission.

Back when she lived in Massachusetts, she met a young boy who was very angry after his parents’ divorce. Each week, Shirley took him out for ice cream. He would talk and she would listen. When he would swear, she would help him find a proper word to fit in its place. When he made up tales, she let him. Many years later she wondered how he grew up to be and learned that he was a deacon. With that Shirley said, “I don’t know if I was the reason, but I’d like to think I started the turn.”

Start the turn suggests that you don’t have to commit to big, monumental change, that you can do something very small to start the turn – even go for ice cream.

For Shirley, the facebook likes, the letters, and the flowers are proof that her message is being heard and being shared. The joy it brings her is beautiful. Joy in hearing that her three simple words have helped, or healed or started the turn.

Compelled to keep spreading Shirley’s message, we are now diving into a new platform – advertising!

To be most effective, Shirley’s campaign will be sponsored by everyday people. People who believe that good will come from her message. People who still believe that kindness can go a long way. The more her spot airs, the faster the billboards pop up across the nation, the clearer we are that we are all so tired of the hate and the hurt resonating through all cultures.

Whether you donate 5 dollars or many, love one another will become your message. You will know it is being shared because of you and Shirley will know that she did her job and started the turn.

If you do not have a dollar to give, Shirley asks that you need not worry - hearing the message is most important. Instead, she says, "Get alone with God. Go outside in the backyard or the garage if you need to and ask God, 'Where do we go from here?' and then wait quietly for a half an hour."
