Help Jayel Get to Grad School

Donation protected
Hello everyone!

The most amazing person I know, Jayel Gant, just got accepted into NYU for grad school to get a Master's degree in performance studies! Unfortunately, despite the financial aid that Jayel received, they are still unable to afford to continue their education. Jayel eventually hopes to obtain their PhD in performance studies, but PhD programs are much better funded than Master's programs.

Jayel's Research

Jayel is graduating in Spring 2018 from Knox College with a BA in Theatre and Creative Writing. They are currently completing a year-long Honor's project called Live Terrains: Cultivating Empathy by Moving Bodies. They taught a course last term on this subject, and my experiences in the course were amazing. My classmates and I learned how to move together and empathize with each other based off of body language. It was really interesting, and I still can't explain exactly how or why any of this happened (Jayel could, of course). Although it seems like a simple enough project, it is extremely complex, and only someone as intellectual as Jayel could understand it. Jayel hopes to be a professor one day in theatre/performance studies or else open their own empathy/dialogue training school. I personally think that the world needs more empathy and dialogue, and the work that Jayel does is really wonderful.

Jayel's Life

Jayel grew up poor in Kansas City, MO, with only a single mother. They were homeschooled for most of their life, and spent time helping their mom and family while also doing school. The rest of their education has been mainly funded by scholarships, including a full ride scholarship to Knox College (I told you they were smart). Being poor has proved to be a significant obstacle in Jayel’s life, and although they haven’t had the upper hand financially, their dedication to hard work has allowed them to be successful anyway. Jayel is also the type of person to always stand up for what they believe in.

Jayel has a Certificate of Achievement from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's SROP, Ave Alvarado Excellence Award from SROP (the highest achievement), and multiple grants for their various research projects in empathy and movement. Jayel is also a McNair scholar and a Graduate School Expiration Fellow (GSEF)

Support Jayel
NYU is the best institution in Jayel's field, with leading professors and courses, but due to its prestigious nature, it is extremely unaffordable for Jayel. They deserve to continue their education and hopefully hold a PhD one day, and they deserve to do so at a university that will benefit them and their learning the most. By supporting Jayel's education, you will be supporting a leader who will have an important impact on theatre and empathy, and someone whom I believe will help push society forward.

Jayel's Expenses:

Grad school: $6,400
Housing: estimated $10-20,000
Food: estimated $2,000
Books & other expenses: estimated $3,000
