It's been a physically devastating six months for my dad, Allen Silverstone. Its left him a frail 118 pounds, unable to walk without assistance, and with substantial cognitive and memory impairment.

All this came on the back of four years that saw him go through a complicated spinal surgery with an extended recovery, get pushed into retirement, and help my mom, Barbara, through six surgeries over three years to put her back together after nearly dying of sepsis caused by complications from rheumatoid arthritis.

It's been devastating for us all, and we've been so fortunate in the love and understanding of friends.

It is embarrassing and painful for me to come to you now to ask for help and support of a different kind for my Dad:

Going over Medicare's limits but still needing care has obliterated his pension and savings. My Mom and I are doing everything we can - she has her hands full keeping up with her own healthcare, and making sure my Dad will have a home to come back to. Nearly every day of mine starts and ends at the nursing facility to visit my Dad to make sure he's gotten the care he needs, and do my best to keep his spirits up.

I've spoken to many of you before about the tremendous help visits, calls, cards, and pictures are for him. But now I'm asking all of you, to whatever degree you can and are willing, to help see us through the financial aspect of this crisis. Though the grand total will likely necessitate bankruptcy and/or Medicaid, there is an immediate need for us to pay for a number of needs to keep Allen on the road to recovery and get him home quickly. These include:

-Down payment to facility or Elder Care Advisory service for ongoing care and forestall any premature termination of services, or discharge (starts at $5,000)

-Ongoing Physical, Occupational, and Cognitive therapy at inpatient facility (no longer covered by Medicare)

-Additional rehabilitation devices, games, and supports (puzzles, flashcards, books, hand stregntheners)

-Home care equipment and supplies not covered by Medicare/NYSHIP

-Moving to an affordable, fully accessible apartment in the greater NYC area (may require multiple months advance payment)

-Copay for outpatient rehabilitation services when home

-In-home assistance during ongoing recovery

-Transportation to oupatient services and adult day care

If you would rather contribute to supporting us at this critical time via check or other transfer outside of GoFundMe (which is great if you're using credit/debit cards or are abroad, but takes 8% off the top in fees), please feel free to email me using the link on here, or call.

All my best, and sincerest thanks -
Dave (and Al and Barbara)

PS - Sorry for the punny title. I couldn't resist. Wouldn't be my father's son if I didn't have a penchant for gallows humor!
