Through Adopteen, I will be spending 10 days in China (July 12-22), 5 days of which will be spent at the orphanage helping out wherever needed. The orphanage is called the Zhuzhou City Children’s Social Welfare Institute, and it's located in Zhuzhou, Hunan which is the same province I was born in.

The donations will go towards purchasing toys, diapers, cribs, books, or anything else the orphanage needs. Any donation would be greatly appreciated! If a monetary donation won't work, I'll be hosting a few fundraisers over the months leading up to the trip, and I would love to have any help I could get.

When I was in an orphanage, most of the children were female due to the one-child policy and an overwhelming preference for males. In 2015, this policy came to an end. Now, an estimated 90-98% of children in Chinese orphanges suffer from a physical or mental handicap and were abandoned because the parents didn't have the means necessary to take care of them. Any donation will give the orphanage more opportunity to support these children.

Since my last update (20 days ago), I’ve collected SO MANY more donations! Special thanks to EVO Rock + Fitness and the wonderful Sarah Fountain for giving me the opportunity to share my story and spread the word. I misunderstood the way GoFundMe processes money, and it turns out they actually keep 7.9% + $0.30 per donation. That brings the grand total so far (GoFundMe + Bake Sale + other donations) to a whole $4876.89! From giving money to helping me with the bake sale to taking time to listen and learn more about Chinese orphanages, I received so much more support from YOU than I had ever expected! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your interest and compassion for the Zhuzhou City Children’s Social Welfare Institute and orphans everywhere is absolutely incredible and awe-inspiring. And, to the people who read the interview and/or donated without even knowing me, you’re amazing. Your love is being felt around the world, and I can’t thank you enough. All but $100 of this total will be going directly to the orphanage for them to buy whatever they need. I will bring the other $100 to China with me to buy toys, books, diapers, or other small things as a gift. Any donations that I collect in the next 9 days will join the $100, and other $4776.89 will be wired to the orphanage on July 5th. Afterwards, if you feel like being even more amazing, consider donating to CCAI ( http://ccaifamily.org)! This is the agency through which I was adopted. Thank you again. If you have any questions or want to know more, please send me an email — alenaholbert@comcast.net!

This is Alena Holbert. I want to thank you so so much for donating to the Zhuzhou City Children’s Social Welfare Institute! I leave in exactly 1 month (July 12). I want to give you an update on how the fundraising is going. So far, I’ve raised $2115 through GoFundMe! However, GoFundMe takes 5% so I received $2,009.25. Even with the 5% taken off, you all still exceeded my goal! In addition, I raised $853.21 from a bake sale I hosted at Rock’n & Jam’n, and another $300 from an unbelievably generous and kind donor! That’s a total of $3,162.46!! All but $100 will go directly towards the orphanage. The $3,062.46 will be combined with the funds raised from the other people on the trip and sent to the orphanage to buy furniture, air conditioning, refrigerators, or anything else the orphanage needs. I will use the other $100 to buy toys, books, diapers, and/or other smaller things in China as a gift to the children. I’m so incredibly grateful for any contribution, whether by giving money, spreading the word, or helping with the bake sale. While, we raised much more than I had expected for a cause that has great significance for me, it’s important to note that I am still collecting funds through July 5th. Any and every donation will go a long way, but simply spreading the word and raising awareness would help tremendously. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. I will do my best to post updates on Facebook while I’m in China.
