Zara's Sri Lanka funds

Sri Lanka – 08/07/19

I live by the motto ‘you only get out of life what you put into it’ and with this in mind I’m setting myself both a challenge and a goal with the aspiration to help others. Currently, I am a second-year undergraduate psychology student and I strongly believe this exciting and challenging placement to which I will explain below, will give me the crucial skills I need to continue striving towards one day pursuing my career as a clinical psychologist.

On the 8th July 2019 I will be travelling to Sri Lanka to undertake a four-week voluntary mental health placement, thus a unique opportunity combining hands on work experience whilst volunteering abroad in an unfamiliar setting. SLV Global, the company I have been offered the placement through, are a UK based organisation set up by a group of psychology graduates in 2010.

In Sri Lanka I will be working in a team with other volunteers from all over the world where we will work five days per week within psychiatric facilities, local schools as well as also organising and contributing towards project activities in under resourced areas. Throughout the placement, I will be accommodated for within a family homestay and will endure the Sri Lankan way of living.

I imagine the placement to be highly demanding and distressing at times, however with the passion and determination qualities I hold for helping others, believe will by far outweigh the difficult times and make my help seem even more worthwhile. However due to this placement being completely voluntary I am having to fund the whole duration by myself and as student working only a part time job, I’m sure as you can imagine individual funds will not cover it all. Therefore, I would be extremely grateful if you could donate towards my funds, no matter how little, every penny will count.

To enhance my donations, I will shortly be organising a few fundraising activities too which I will explain and detail within due time. Finally, I would like to also make everybody aware this placement is not a holiday for me and by no means am I trying to raise money to go and enjoy a nice holiday, as explained above it is completely voluntary, I will be working five days a week with no wage for four weeks all with the strive and commitment to aid and make a difference to individuals wellbeing’s who are a lot less fortunate than us.

Thank you for taking time to read my story, I hope with the help of your donations I can go to Sri Lanka, impact the lives of others and come back with the confidence to also enhance and bring more awareness of the mental health services within the UK.

Thank you,

Zara
