Striving For A Better Future

My name is Johnathan Wornian. I am a student at Baldwin Middle School, in Baldwin, New York. I have been invited to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, in Washington DC. This program is to help develop future leaders of our country.
In my 13 years, I have faced and overcome many challenges. My parents separated and a year later I lost my mother to a tragic car accident. After moving around quite a bit, my father, brother and I moved in with my grandparents on Long Island. Moving so frequently was very difficult, but it taught me many valuable lessons. First, I became very resilient. I learned that things may be hard, but it only lasts a moment. Secondly, I have become very helpful and compassionate, understanding when others have trouble and help when I can. Even though these experiences were painful, they helped me become a leader in school. Teachers know I am willing to help and often select me. I am always willing to accept the challenge.
My grandparents have blessed me with beautiful opportunities. They value education and try to encourage me to participate in everything I can. My Grandpa signed me up for wrestling, which I have been doing for 3 years now. I went 13-0 my first middle school season. I play the viola and recently participated in my second NYSSMA competition.
I am reaching out today to help me make my dream of attending this program become a reality. This is hard for me because it is such a high expense. I am also raising money by working for people in my community. This year’s leadership conference is very important to me because the keynote speakers is actually wrestler Anthony Robles. He is a role model for me being the NCAA Division 1 champion. I would be an excellent candidate for this program, because I am a good communicator and always listen to the ideas of others. Feedback is my friend. It is my goal to continue to improve in all areas, both academic and social.
I appreciate this opportunity to be a part of this wonderful conference. It is my hope that I will learn skills in this program that will help me make a change for the better in this world, for myself and others. I thank you for your consideration in possibly assisting me with the high cost of the expensive tuition.
Sincerely yours,
Johnathan Wornian
