Hands Across the Border

In September, about a dozen of us will go to the US-Mexico border to help migrant families seeking refuge in America. 

Women, children and men from all over the world are living in crowded shelters or on the streets in cities like Tijuana. 

They are in desperate need of essentials such as food, clothes, diapers and personal care products. They are in danger.

We're going. 

We'll volunteer with San Diego-based organizations, and help them deliver donations to shelters across the border. 

We'll serve meals in a San Diego shelter, where migrant families prepare to travel to their new homes, often thousands of miles away by bus. 

We'll sit in on immigration court cases as observers, to make sure migrants are receiving proper treatment from judges. 

Some of us may even join a "water drop" in the desert to prevent border crossers from dying of dehydration and heat stroke.

We'll do whatever we can, wherever it's needed.

We're paying for air fare, lodging, food and ground transportation for up to two weeks in San Diego and Tijuana. 

And we could use a little help, and not just with our expenses. We plan to buy needed items for the shelters and organizations that support migrants and asylum-seekers.

These people are fleeing for their lives. Their stories of persecution and violence in their home countries are chilling and heartbreaking. They've been beaten, raped, had their homes burned down, seen their neighbors murdered.

These are human beings, just like you and me. They work hard, and they have dreams of a better life -- if not for themselves, then for their children.
