This fund has been created for our employees at Riva Cucina, who are currently without work due to our temporary closure.
When Massi and I opened our restaurant 13 years ago, I asked him how he envisioned this dream of his that was becoming a reality. His response was to create a space that felt like our guests were coming over to a friend's house for lunch or dinner. That vision has been our north star, not only in our operations, but in our hiring decisions. When we interview, we look for character and positivity, for folks that we think will feel as good as we do when our guests enjoy their experience with us. Will they be genuinely kind, not only to our patrons, but to each other? Will they work as hard as their colleagues and stay calm during the rushes? We can answer yes to every question for every single one of our employees at Riva. Anyone who has dined with us knows how special our staff is.
We've had the pleasure of employing our lead cooks and pasta maker for 11 of the past 13 years, our lead server for 6, and a majority of the remaining staff for 2+ years. We've celebrated marriages, births, graduations, first home purchases, and been there for each other in tougher times. Our team carried Riva when our home burned down in the 2017 wildfires and when our daughter was diagnosed with kidney disease shortly thereafter. To say we love and appreciate our staff is beyond an understatement.
We have taken this week to try to understand if takeout and delivery service might be a possibility. While there is nothing more than we would like to do to show support to both our staff and community, it has become abundantly clear that we cannot do this due to our daughter and me having compromised immune systems. We sadly must heed the advice of our doctors and of family and friends in Italy who are urging us to take every precaution possible as they witness firsthand how devastating this virus can be.
We have created this fund so that any of our past guests and larger community who would like to offer some support to our team while we are closed can do so. We understand this pandemic is affecting all of us financially so it is with humility that we make this fund an option for contributing. For those of you who have already bought gift cards from us to show support, we thank you and will be sure our staff benefits from those sales as well.
Ultimately, we wish all of you health during this time. We cannot wait to welcome you back to Riva and we send you our heartfelt thanks for all your support over these past 13 years.
