La Peña Campesina

Nestled between Monterey and Santa Cruz, Watsonville is a small agricultural town surrounded by fields and apple orchards. This town is loved by its community members but at times gang violence and farm worker injustice tends to overshadow its natural beauty.

We are a small group of community organizers working towards creating a safe space full of creativity and art while bringing awareness to the farm workers plight. We want to address the human right violations that farm workers deal with on a daily bases: (sexual, physical, mental) abuse, long hours, cheap pay, high rent, etc. Almost every Watsonville community member either works in the fields or knows somebody who does and this is how we are all connected. Even though these issues might not affect you directly your awareness of these issues are vital to the improvement of farm worker justice.

So, in response to these issues we are organizing a Peña on May 1st. A Peña is known as a meeting place or grouping of musicians or artists associated with social justice and grassroots culture. We are asking the community to help us bring this event to life. Donations will be used towards supporting Mare Advertencia Lirika, a female rap artist visiting from Oaxaca, along with other expenses such as food and drinks. We appreciate anything you can donate and thank you!

Vamos a tener una Peña que se llamara "La Peña Campesina" y sera un evento para tomar conciencia sobre la difícil situación que están pasando lxs trabajadores del campo. Queremos crear un espacio de creatividad, arte , y organización. Somos miembrxs de una comunidad agrícola . La mayoría de nuestra comunidad ya sea que trabaja en el campo o conoce alguien que lo hace. Esto es lo que nos une y por eso queremos hacer frente a las violaciones humanas que lxs trabajadores agrícolas enfrentan al diario las cuales tienen que ver con: el abuso (sexual, físico, mental ), largas horas de trabajo, la mano de obra barata, vivienda deplorable, y muchos otros problemas. Estamos pidiendo a la comunidad que forme parte del patrocinio de este evento  que se llevará a cabo el dia 1ro de mayo día del trabajo en 134 Maple Ave. Apreciamos cualquier cantidad  que pueda aportar!.
