Educate Girls to Change the World

Hello everyone! My name is Anderson Clayton and I'm a freshman at Appalachian State University. During the summer of 2014, I went on a humanitarian trip to Ghana, Africa, through a program called Global Leadership Adventures (GLA).

While I was there, I taught English to sixth grade students, built two kindergarten classrooms, and immersed myself in the rich African culture. My first day teaching at Dziedzorve was the beginning of my appreciation for education. I walked into the sixth grade classroom to find no electricity—the only light coming in from the windows—wooden boards used as “desks” scattered on the floor, and a dusty chalkboard that hung halfway off the wall. Describing the conditions of these classrooms is almost impossible, but I would like people to understand that these kids had only one thing to come to school for, the opportunity to learn.

Before my trip, I would say I took little notice to the advantages I was given in life, thinking I somehow “deserved” them. After witnessing Dziedorve Basic School and my kids in Anloga this past summer, I will never again take lightly the subject of education. Education is a vital portion of our society that has become less and less appreciated, but I would like to make known that education is not always a right, but a privilege, and students everywhere should feel honored to be afforded the opportunity to learn.

It's been over a year now, and as I started my freshman year of college, I knew I wanted to help my kids that I left behind. This fundraiser is for them, the ones who impacted my life in every way possible. All funds raised will be wire transferred back to Dziedorve Basic School in order to provide scholarships for students whose families cannot afford to send their children to school.
