Neema Family

We are trying to help this young South African family to hold off long enough to complete the mountains of paperwork to begin their NGO here in Tanga Tanzania. It’s been a long uphill battle and the young man is returning to work in South Africa while the wife and two children remain trying to get this paperwork completed. This takes a lot of fortitude and a bit of money to keep it all rolling along. We are not religious ourselves but it’s remarkable the faith and belief that this couple has that things will work out in their endeavor.

Here is what they are doing:

Neema Family

Neema is a Swahili word meaning Grace, for it is out of the grace of God that these plans were conceived and His grace makes it possible for us to start this NGO and do the work that God has called us to do.

In Tanzania, the law states that no teenager who becomes pregnant can continue her education in a government school. The president, Mr John Magufuli is enforcing this law very strictly. Girls in as young as 11 years, is subjected to a compulsory pregnancy test at school twice per year, before exams are written. If a girl is found to be pregnant, she is expelled for life without a chance to return, even after her baby is born.

In a recent article published in Africanews.com Tanzanian president Mr Magufuli is quoted as challenging NGO’s trying to fight this law, to rather educate these mothers themselves. Neema Family aims to do just that.

“These NGOs should go out and open schools for parents. But they should not force the government [to take back the pupils]. “I’m giving out free education for students who have really decided to go and study, and now you want me to educate the parents?” he posed rhetorically. - http://www.africanews.com/2018/01/08

Neema Family will provide a safe place where vulnerable pregnant teenagers and child mothers can come to daily to get two meals, get ante-natal and post-natal support, learn valuable life skills enabling them to start a small business or find employment so that they can provide for themselves and their children. Our aim is to help these girls to grow into contributing members of society.

Concept for first year:

Vulnerable pregnant girls up to the age of 17, are enrolled into a two year life skills program.

In the program, they will learn:

·         English

·         Ante-natal and post-natal care

·         Early childhood development

·         Personal hygiene

·         How to make natural products (coconut oil, soap etc.)

·         How to make and use basic natural medicine.

·         Craft projects especially making use of recycled materials

·         Basic sewing skills

·         Cooking and baking projects
