Walking for Freedom Sydney!

Donation protected
In 2009 a total of 54 refugees were given adverse ASIO assessments. Many of these 54 people spent 5-6 years in detention. Over the past two years the majority of these refugees were released. Eleven refugees still remain in detention today, coming up to their seventh year detained.

They have not been given any reasons as to why they are being detained, and have no legal means to challenge their situation.

Walking for Freedom (W4F) is a Melbourne-based advocacy group calling for the release of refugees with adverse ASIO assessments. The members of W4F are regular visitors to refugees in detention, and are friends with many of those affected by the adverse ASIO checks.

In January this year, W4F undertook a 32-hour walk around the ASIO headquarters in Canberra for the 32 refugees in this situation at the time. In May this year another walk was held for 30 hours, this time around the ASIO offices in Melbourne.

In January 2016 W4F will be a holding a 24-hour walk in Sydney for all refugees who are still indefinitely detained because of ASIO assessments.

We are currently raising money for this next walk in Sydney. W4F relies solely on donations. Money donated will go towards food, materials such as flyers and educational resources, printing, t-shirts and accommodation/venue costs (if required). Any leftover money will be donated to the families of these refugees (many of whom still live in their home countries, particularly Sri Lanka).
