Phyllis's Story
Phyllis T. Lise is the founder of Dressing Angels.
"Dressing Angels was officially established August 20, 2013 as a non-profit organization that provides clothing and shoes to those who are either mentally ill, homeless, or in need.
This charity is very personal to me because my son has a mental illness. For over 28 years I have worked in the private sector in Business Administrative work, but has always known in my heart since I was a little girl that I was born to become an advocate in my community to help someone in need. When my son was diagnosed in 2009 with a mental illness I knew that it was GOD’S Mission for ME to help the mentally ill.
Upon researching my son's mental illness, I was stunned to learn that 1 in 4 Americans are living with some form of a mental illness and many do not have adequate clean clothing and shoes to wear. I witnessed this problem first hand while volunteering at mental hospitals and speaking to the mentally ill and there families. Without hesitating, I rolled up my sleeves and vowed to become an advocate for all mental ill children and adults by aggressively mobilizing key players In my Community from my State Senator to my Mayor to help end this growing problem and lend their resources to make sure that the mentally ill in my Community have clean clothing and shoes. I have come to recognize my involvement as having been and still being a source of enriching experiences.
My goal for the future is to open a resource center to provide clothing, shoes, support groups, activities, and training for the mentally ill to become self sufficient. As a Community it is OUR duty to make sure our mentally ill are treated with dignity and compassion."
