Fund Gene Research for JCM

Donation protected
Imagine waking up in the morning to let your puppy outside. You smile as you realize your newest family member has let you sleep through the night for the first time. “She’s catching on,” you think as you walk to her crate to wake her up for potty time. You can hear the kids stirring in their rooms as they wake up to get ready for school. You open your puppy’s cage door, but she doesn’t stir. Your heart quickly fills with terror as you discover that your perfectly fit and seemingly healthy puppy passed away in the middle of the night.

If you haven't heard about the Juvenile Cardiomyopathy study, your puppy’s necropsy will most likely be performed by your regular vet and come back as inconclusive because a pathologist must examine heart tissue samples to determine cause of death. Sadly, there is no test to determine if a living animal is affected by or carries the gene to produce Juvenile Cardiomyopathy – making it impossible for breeders to determine if a breeding pair will produce this deadly heart disease.

Now, we finally have a fighting chance to stop Juvenile Cardiomyopathy (JCM) in its tracks...

For the first time, researchers at the University of Minnesota, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Prince Edward Island are coming together with a single goal -- to find the gene causing JCM. If they are successful, breeders will be able to test for and eliminate JCM from Toy Manchester Terriers and English Toy Terriers forever.

But they can't do it without your help.

Identification of the JCM gene is expected to cost up to $15,000 (USD). To reach this target, breeders, clubs and individual owners around the world will need to pull together and give like never before.*

From now through March 31, 2016, donations may be made through this GoFundMe page. These are NOT tax-deductible, however, to thank you for your generosity, the JCM committee has commissioned a one-of-a-kind design from artist and Manchester Terrier owner Molly Yang.

Variations of this beautiful design  feature the above puppy, and have been created to celebrate the intense love we share with our loyal Black and Tans and is exclusive to this fundraiser. That means the only way to own it is to donate through this fundraiser by April 1, 2016! Check out the reward levels below for information on how you can receive fun, logo'd products like car magnets, tote bags, throw blankets, and signed and numbered prints. Images of the products will be uploaded to the JCM Study page as they become available.

Now is your chance to dig deep and help us push toward our final goal!

Note: We are committed to making every dollar raised work hard for our breed's future. Funds collected via GoFundMe or through donations made to the AMTC or CMTC for the purposes of this study will be pooled and directed for use by the JCM study team as needed. Should the JCM marker be identified before all moneys raised have been spent, remaining funds will be split evenly between the AMTC and CMTC health committees to support future breed-related health projects.
