Hand in Hand

Donation protected
The past few days I have regretted never considering law school. It seemed like the most useful way to help with an issue that is close to my heart, immigration and refugee resettlement.  But I am an artist so this is one thing I'd like to do. I started making these little hand pincushions recently, and I would now like to use them to raise money for the ACLU. I am asking for pledges of thirty dollars. Half would go to the ACLU, and the other half towards materials, postage and installation costs. Anything that was leftover from those costs would also be donated-I am not looking to make any kind of profit here.   Please donate in units of $30!

The pincushions will be displayed as part of my Master of Fine Arts show in May, and another yet to be determined space in the summer.  After those exhibitions, each individual who pledged money would receive their pincushion the mail. This goal is to  raise money for a cause, and to bring awareness to a devastating issue.

The pincushions are the size of a two year old's hand, the pattern  traced from my nephew's little hand.  They are made of various fabrics, some of which are hand dyed and embroidered.  I use a fiber called kapok to stuff them--it's a natural fiber from a seed pod.  Holding one feels almost like holding a child's hand.

Recently I saw a video of a toddler sitting in a hospital, covered in dust from the rubble of his bombed house and bleeding from his head.  He was silent, terrified beyond the point of crying, his little hands clasped together helplessly.  Now we have decided that he is not welcome in this country.  I am in no way okay with that.  The ACLU is helping to fight back against the executive order that threw our airports into chaos and split apart families this week, and they are going to need our continued support.  That's why I want to donate the money I raise with this project to them.
