Wycheproof Pre-School celebrates 50 years of operation in 2016. Wycheproof is located midway between Melbourne and Mildura on the Calder Hwy, Victoria.
Due to low enrolment numbers and an initial unfavourable government funding model in 2016, the Kindergarten was at the point of not operating, so our milestone year was in danger of not proceeding.
A late change to the funding models for small rural kindergartens by the Andrews Government has enabled kindergarten to continue at Wycheproof without having to combine services with Birchip(a 70 km round trip). This was a possibility due to both centres experiencing low enrolment numbers and outrageous funding shortfall targets for both of our committees. Ballarat YMCA worked hard, and came up with an operation model that worked for both the Wycheproof and Nullawil communities this year. Nullawil is a small feeder town for the Wycheproof Kindergarten and schools located 27 km away. So the Nullawil parents are commuting a 54 km round trip to participate in kindergarten and fundraising activities at Wycheproof.
The Andrews Government announced an increase of funding and combined with the announcement of additional drought funding of up to $10,000 this meant the Wycheproof Kindergarten Committee had been given a more manageable fundraising target for 2016 that was less than $20,000.
In 2015 we raised $12,996 towards covering the government funding shortfall. Our thanks are extended to everyone in our local community and the businesses that helped us to raise as much as we did. The low numbers of children and their parents in 2016 makes it difficult for some of the more traditional fundraising events. Any donations big or small towards our fundraising target, will be gratefully appreciated. The funding model for small rural kindergartens has changed again for 2017 so the fundraising task will not be as onerous as what it has been in the last few years.
With this crowd funding exercise, our aim is to raise $2000. This amount will ensure that our 2016 commitments are met.
Come along and have a look at the kinder and see how things have changed (or not) in the last 50 years.
Hope to see you there and help us keep going with the fundraising by forwarding this to your family and friends.
Thanks for your comments Lynette. Wycheproof already has an Op Shop operated by volunteers which is very generous with grants to various community organisations and sporting clubs for equipment and the like.
maybe wyche and Nullawil should look at opening a op shop for the kinder. both towns are in a ideal spot , being on the calder. This is what they have in wedderburn for the Kinder. Its a great way to fundraise also. I am sure there is empty shops that could easily be filled with good second hand goods for sale.
