World Vision Philippines

As a former fundraiser working on behalf of amazing various charities, my favourite organizations to work for usually are the ones who work closely with children. There is something very fulfilling about helping as much children as I can in the simplest way possible.

Following the success of our campaign last year for a Philippines based charity, this year we will be fundraising for an international NPO who works closely with Filipino children. World Vision is a humanitarian organization devoted to improving the lives of families and communities to overcome poverty. As the largest NPO in the Philippines, they help over 1.5 million children every year with the help of thousands of donors. World Vision runs many campaigns over the year including projects to improve educational experience, livelihood, health and nutrition, disaster response, and most importantly child protection.

World Vision believes that that education is the path out of poverty. Many of the families that we work with live far away from schools and/or have very little to support their children. World Vision’s goal is to improve the functional literacy of children to help them gain more opportunities to overcome poverty and live life in all its fullness. To do this, World Vision partnered with the Department of Education and local government units. They collaborate with parents, volunteers and communities to improve learning in school, after school and at home. They also extend the help to parents and guardians to teach responsible parenting and literacy building to parents and community members. In 2017, they reached over 50,770 children through educational, functional literacy programs and skills training nationwide.

28 out of 100 Filipinos are currently living below the poverty line and the majority of the people are in rural areas. Farmers and fisherfolks remain the lowest paid workers in the country making it extremely difficult for them to support their families. To help these families, holistic and effective economic development programs are essential. The entrepreneurial poor needs resources and technical support to have access to food, education and healthcare. World Vision offers the necessary training and tools for families to provide the basic needs of their children. In 2017, about 1,344 household members were trained with enterprise development skills while 295 people were taught practical ways to approach employers. Livelihood for every family in a community means to increase income that translates to food, education, healthcare and asset creation.

Good health is the foundation on which a promising future is built. Many children miss the opportunity to reach their full potential because they lack access to proper health and nutrition. World Vision protects children and mothers from malnutrition, tuberculosis, HIV, and AIDS by helping them have access to nutritious food, clean water, good hygiene and essential health services. Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death among children under five years old. World Vision supports the government’s efforts to reduce malnutrition among children in the Philippines through targeted health and nutrition programs. World Vision works with communities to make sure that parents and their children are well-nourished, protected from infection and disease, and have access to clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education. Our projects help support mothers and their children in their development during the most critical period of their growth. In 2017, Pinoy Nutrition Hubs helped recover about 400 children from malnutrition nationwide.

The Philippines ranks third as the most disaster-prone country in the world due to the frequent occurrences of typhoons, presence of tectonic faults and active volcanoes all over the country. Disasters have placed a tremendous burden to affected families and communities, as they cope and survive from tragic catastrophes. In 2013 alone, about 12.9 million people were affected by Typhoon Haiyan, leaving 1.9 million people homeless, 281,091 houses destroyed, 575,378 people in evacuation centres, 2.5 million people in need of food and 4,460 people dead. World Vision’s priority is to improve the resilience of communities to disasters and give children a safer environment to live in. When emergencies and calamities occur, we want communities to have access to basic life-saving needs. We want families to easily recover by relying on their own capacities and resources.

Finally and most importantly, advocating for the rights of children is an essential part of World Vision’s work. They advocate by promoting and influencing policies to protect children, especially the most vulnerable in poor communities. World Vision‘s advocacy is anchored on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC), which the Philippine government is fully committed “to ensure that the child is protected against all forms of discrimination or punishment on the basis of the status, activities, expressed opinions, or beliefs of the child’s parents, legal guardians, or family members” and to “undertake all appropriate legislative, administrative, and other measures for the implementation of the rights recognized in the convention”.

This campaign is a chance for us to do something really simple and small but collectively and as a community makes a massive difference in a lot of children’s lives. Our campaign will focus more on awareness to make sure that we can gather supporters not only in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world. We are hoping to get the same support (and more!) from all the people who helped us make our campaign last year possible. With the help of each and every single one of you we can make a huge difference for these children.

‘’Our advocacy means amplifying the voice of the least heard, highlighting children’s issues and promoting concrete solutions to better impact and benefit children as a whole.’’
