Save the Woodstock Caboose
Donation protected
For the last 50 years our 1920's Chicago Northwestern caboose has been a curious and iconic landmark in Northern Illinois. In the early 1970's it was delivered by rail to Union Illinois where it was then transported to Woodstock and gently laid onto steel track and timbers.
Visible from Dean Street and just 5 minutes south of historic Woodstock Square (where the movie Groundhog Day was filmed) this caboose has found its way into countless photographs and hearts. Since moving to Woodstock we have met many individuals who have fond childhood memories of the caboose - warming themselves near the coal stove while ice-skating and using it to change into swimsuits for summer swimming in the adjacent pond.
Time has weathered the original woodwork and paint - creating a rich patina attainable only through history and nature. Despite years of weathering and our best attempts to maintain it, the structural integrity of the caboose now requires more drastic action.
We are raising funds to SAVE the Woodstock Caboose by rebuilding it as an extremely unique Airbnb available to the public for rental.
It will be a fully furnished tiny house on rails - complete with heat, running water, and composting toilet. However the new structure will still remain true to the spirit and functions of the original caboose. Much of the metalwork, bracing, and roof timbers will be incorporated into the new design along with some cleverly hidden upgrades... additional windows for the views, greater headroom to accommodate a split-level interior, a lower deck connecting to the pond, and an expanded cupola on top big enough for a queen bed. Imagine sleeping up top and with room for more people (or kids) below in the Murphy bunks!
