Hope for Hilldale Cemetery

Hilldale cemetery is located on Hilldale Avenue in Haverhll, Massachusetts.  This 20+ acre cemetery contains more than 4000 plots some of which date back to the early 1800's.  The cemetery contains a great deal of history.  The soldier's hill area contains a large number of civil war era veteran stones and a monument to veterans.  Indeed, the stones of veterans of all conflicts are located throughout the cemtery.  Pioneers of the City of Haverhill, farmers, doctors, lawyers... people of all walks of life are buried at Hilldale.
Sadly, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair due to neglect.  The current board of the Hilldale Cemetery Association has taken on the monumental task of reclaiming Hilldale Cemetery from the elements and the years of neglect.  We have made some progress in the front and left hand sections of the cemetery, a great deal of trimming, mowing and resetting of stones has already occurred... but we have much work ahead of us.
There is currently very little money in our account.  We currently own only hand operated lawn care equipment (push mowers and battery powered weed whackers, rakes, clippers).  We rely on volunteers and board members to care for the cemetery  In the summer of 2014 Nicholas Dobrosielski, a Haverhill Eagle Scout completed his Eagle Scout project at the cemetery which involved the contruction and installation of a welcome sign at the entrance that includes a full map of the cemetery, cutting and removing brush, mowing and thatching and plantings as well.  More than 300 man hours went into the cemetery as a result of that project.  Nicholas has since joined the board of directors of the Hilldale Cemetery Association and is workign to ensure that his work does not come undone.
Our goals for the coming seasons are: Continuing to mow, thatch and remove brush from areas of the cemetery, continue to build our compost area, so that we can use the compost in areas of the cemtery without added cost.  We would also like to be able to purchase ride on lawn care equipment and a shed in which to store it.
Aside from monetary donations, assistance from volunteers is greatly needed and appreciated.  Donation of lumber,  powered lawn equipment that is in good working order, hand tools such as trimmers, rakes, shovels, and pitchforks are also very welcome.   The board is able to offer community service credits to volunteers for scouts, school, church and community, etc.
Your help is greatly needed and much appreciated

We have made much progress at the cemetery thanks to volunteers and fundraising efforts. We have much more to do. Local farm owner Tyler Kimball has offered to do some major work at the cemetery for us, work that would be very difficult for volunteers to do by hand. He is doing so at a significantly reduced cost. We need to raise $1500 in order to reimburse him for costs incurred in doing the work. Please consider a donation today! Any amount will be a great help.

The photo I just posted is of 3 trees that must come down near the entrance of the cemetery. They are dying and dropping large limbs when the wind blows. They pose a safety hazard to pedestrians and to the fragile stones around them. We have had an offer from a local tree company (Maple Leaf Tree Services) to remove these trees and the debris for $2000 which is extremely generous of them. We have had a local partial donation from another local company, Lynch Pellet Stoves and we are hoping to raise the rest so that we can quickly get this situation taken care of. We have already used donations to bring the insurance for the cemetery current, purchased new signage informing visitors of policies regarding dog walking, purchased a lawn mower and are hoping to do more as we go forward. Please consider donating to help us get these trees down!!!

My son Tyler Capetanelis lost his Dad 9 years ago so he & I spent the last 9 yrs walking down the cemetery; When we started back then it was so shameful how over grown everything was, we kept Tylers Dad and Grandparents plot cleaned but it was the only spot taken care of! Since then all the volunteers have done an amazing job clearing & cleaning; and now I am so heartbroken to say my beautiful kind sensitive son Tyler is buried with his Dad since 7/25/15 Tyler was a great soul that helped everyone, but couldn't help himself, he suffered from depression because of losing his Dad; he would want me and others too make this cemetery beautiful again where he now Rest in Peace, Thank you for reading my story and doing a great job Forever Tylers Mom Cindy
