Raising money for RV rental, food, toilets for a long term presence at the gates of the Tent Prison for children at Tornillo, Texas. Looking for funds, and even more, for hardy souls to stand vigil through the holidays.

Witness: Tornillo

CHILDREN ARE BEING HELD IN AN INHUMANE “TENT CITY” IN TORNILLO, TEXAS. WE GATHER TO BEAR WITNESS AND DEMAND ITS CLOSURE AND UNIFICATION OF THE CHILDREN WITH THEIR LOVED ONES.

Call to Action

Once there were plans to turn this small port of entry, between the U.S. and Mexico, into a major commercial artery. Roads were improved. The county built a toll plaza to help pay back for the multimillion dollar project. But the dream of the planners never materialized. A drug-hungry nation meets an impoverished population along a river...fertile ground for what amounts to a criminal conspiracy, a tragic marriage of convenience. Cartels flourished. And the dream withered.

The port of entry is at the edge of the West Texas town of Tornillo. Forty miles or so from El Paso. There isn’t much traffic. The toll station stands disused, ghostly. But one enterprise thrives. A U.S. Border Protection and Enforcement station has been converted to a place to hold children, teenagers mostly, who are immigrants and asylum seekers. A tent city full of children, more children arriving each day. The children wait for family members and sponsors to claim them, but it has been made clear to the families that they jeopardize their own status by coming forward.

There is no school, and services are spare. The normal rules that apply to conditions in a shelter for children do not apply, they say. This is an “emergency,” they say. And we agree.

We have gotten permission from the county to use the toll house parking lot that stands near the gates of the prison. Boys and girls are inside, more than 2000 now, soon to be 4000. We will go there and stand as witnesses. We will film, we will raise our eyes, our voices, our signs in protest.

Stand with us. Our bodies, in defiance, must speak, and be heard across the world. Be prepared to stay.

Your donations are keeping the vigil alive. We will stay, and watch, and report until Homestead prison for children ducks the glare of publicity and hides in the darkness of history.

Thank you.
