Latest News ........

Finally back on the river.

The Postwick village litter pick organised by the Green Group was a very windy but successful morning with lots of villagers supporting the event.

Latest News .........
Sadly been off the river for a while due to injury to myself and my Dad ( a.k.a. support crew) having had a shoulder operation.
With the weather now improving I'm really keen to get back out on the Broads.
Also looking forward to joining the Postwick Green Group with their village Litter Pick on 9th March.

Happy New Year !!

Wishing all the supporters of my 'Great Broads Cleanup' a very Merry Christmas ! Let's hope in 2019 we can encourage people to look after our fantastic Norfolk Broads. @KayakCleanupWil

LATEST NEWS....

Thank you to Wroxham & Hoveton Lions Club, Postwick Green Group and Private Individuals for their recent, generous donations to my Great Broads Clean up ( Tanzania Trip ).  All donations are very much appreciated. @KayakCleanupWil

Thanks to the very generous donation I have just received from Anglian Water I have now exceeded my initial "Camps International" target to pay for the trip.
The extra funds I have can now go towards the further costs I will incur for Vaccinations, Working Visa, UK travel to and from the airport and personal kit required.
I will continue to fundraise in a bid to cover the extras above so any further donations would be gratefully recieved.

THANK YOU

Thanks to all companies big and small along with the numerous private individuals who have so generously contributed their own money, time and effort to support me in reaching my goal to improve the environment and lives of others both locally and internationally.

Thank you all

William

Story
Hi everyone, my name is Will. I am a 13 year old student at Broadland High School in Hoveton, Norfolk . I have the incredible, life changing opportunity to be part of the Camps International team trip to Tanzania in the summer of 2019.

The trip will involve plenty of really hard work helping with important projects which will benefit the local people, such as:-

-       Creating a real impact on marine conservation by cleaning the beaches of all unwanted plastic that has found its way into the sea and then onto the beaches. This will not only save marine life from injury – and even death- but will help protect our beautiful yet fragile world as a whole.

-       Building/Renovating classrooms to provide the local children with new and exciting, yet safe, environment to learn.

-       Installing new water facilities at schools and in villages, for the locals to be able to access safe, clean water.

-       Planting new trees to overcome commercial deforestation and aide the battle against global warming because trees take in harmful CO2 gases and release oxygen into the air.

Alongside all the different building skills required for all the jobs (as stated above) I will be learning bush craft skills as well.

This will also give me the opportunity to interact with the local children and communities on a daily basis and it will allow me to experience how different cultures live and appreciate the things we take for granted.

UCAS points can also be gained - in readiness for university.

I know that there will be times when it will be hard work, but, I am sure the sense of achievement whilst developing new important life skills and making new friends will be worth it.

This made me think about all the plastic, glass and other items of rubbish that I encounter often whilst out on the Norfolk Broads, on my kayak, family boat or fishing from the river bank.  I am fully aware that the waste I see is mainly non- biodegradable and will therefore remain in the Broads waterways forever, unless someone removes it.

Example:-  I went out onto Wroxham Broad recently and discovered within approximately 200 yards of the banks – 6 plastic bottles, 4 buckets, 1 fender, 1 tin can, 1 item of fishing tackle, 1 boat hook, 1 car tyre and 9 other various plastic items.

I then decided to carry out a check of the main river between the two entrances to Wroxham Broad and there I discovered a further 22 plastic bottles, 3 glass bottles, 1 paint can, 1 tin can, 2 supermarket carrier bags full of waste,  1 item of fishing tackle, a McDonalds balloon and a further 11 items of plastic waste.

A total of 65 items found in just 2 hours and within less than 1 mile

Please see photos at bottom of page which has a small selection of photos collected whilst out on Wroxham Broad

The impact of this problem is that it can affect the beautiful natural wildlife and their habitants along with visitors’ perception and enjoyment of the locals. Therefore, I thought that it would be a good idea (based on how bad the Broads has become) to act sooner rather than later to reverse this worrying trend.

To raise sponsorship to cover the cost of my trip to Tanzania my commitment to my sponsors will not only be to spend 4 weeks working in Tanzania but also to spend this summer completing a minimum of 100 miles kayaking the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads waterways in order to remove as much waste as I can see and collect. This task needs to be done by kayak as the majority of the waste will be impossible to access via a boat as it is trapped in areas of reeds, under over-hanging trees, dense bushes or in very shallow water. I will be supported in this task by my family, one of which will kayak with me, whilst the others will drive a boat where we can store the waste.

Challenge.

All Northern rivers and Broads above Acle Bridge.

Please help me to make a difference to the world’s environment, people’s daily lives and the future of our wildlife. I will only be able to achieve this through your kind support. Any donations, however small, will be welcomed and very much appreciated. Thank you.

Regards,

 William
